Biography

Phil Weisman, independent filmmaker, professional film editor and teacher was born and raised within the New York City metropolitan area.  He studied under Larry GottheimKen Jacobs and Nicholas Ray at Binghamton University and graduated with a BA.  While at Binghamton University Weisman worked as a participant in Ken Jacobs' Apparition Theater of New York and on Nicholas Ray's feature film, We Can't Go Home Again.

Weisman also earned an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. 

His many accomplishments include the founding of Collective for Living Cinema, a film-arts organization which was funded by the New York State Council on the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Arts, he taught at various universities including the University of Rhode Island and Vassar College and has served as a member of the Board of Trustees for the Black Maria Film and Video Festival

He has also worked as a consultant for a number of feature films relating to digital issues and practices, as well as produced and directed his own series of short films and videos that have been exhibited internationally. 

​During the seven years prior to his full-time teaching appointment to BMCC, he worked as a post-production professional on numerous films including Edward Burn’s She’s the One, Jim Sheridan’s The Boxer and Robert Duvall’s Assassination Tango. Recently, Professor Weisman completed a feature-length screenplay, Elysia’s Knot.
