The Film-Makers' Cooperative is a place where artists who break all the rules of conventional movie-making come together to celebrate cinema as a form of personal expression. When New York filmmaker Lynne Sachs met Amanda Katz and G. Anthony Svatek, they too wanted to challenge the entropy of the mainstream doc world with their radical awareness of form. Since then, the three filmmakers have found themselves in the same New York film communities, collaborating and providing feedback on each other’s work. Lynne’s short films gather historical ephemera and explore the complexity of conveying reality through time, distance, and speech. Conversely, Anthony’s piece exposes how the digital age’s global connections endanger the very foundations that these moments exist on, turning environmental oblivion into intangible catastrophe. Finally, Amanda’s performance film ingeniously follows her research into becoming a prospective citizen of a foreign country, the very process of which is cause for personal contention. Under the title Softening Certainties, Sachs has invited Katz and Svatek to join her at Ludlow House to participate in a shared investigation of the ways that the camera both witnesses and hides our understanding of reality and truth.
