Displaced Person (1981) 16mm, black and white, 10.5 min

Genre: Experimental

Keywords: Found Footage, Music

DISPLACED PERSON works with a carefully chosen set of particular elements in order to explore the larger questions within the historical field. Stately and sinuous passages from a Beethoven string quartet create a complex argumentation around images and text. This music, both sympathetic and distanced, establishes rhythm and breadth in relation to a radio interview with Claude Levi-Strauss, and archival footage obtained from rephotographing Marcel Ophul's The Sorrow and the Pity. These elements wheel through many revolutions of repetitions and combinations, forming multiple perspectives. Through recontextualization, meaning blossoms rationally and incongruously like the alleged blossoming of flowers that took place in the dead of winter in wartime Germany, brought on by the intense temperatures of exploding shells. DISPLACED PERSON is a tether that entwines and unravels; by necessity and the nature of its subject it is inconclusive.

Cooperation of Parts (1987) 16mm, color, 42 min

Genre: Experimental

Keywords: Ethnic / Multicultural, History, Philosophical

The images for COOPERATION OF PARTS were shot in Europe in 1983. The film begins at a train station in Calais, France and ends on a street in Radom, Poland. In between are images of Paris, Munich, Dachau, Berlin, Warsaw and Auschwitz/Birkenau. Unlike most films that deal with the Holocaust, COOPERATION OF PARTS takes place firmly in the present and does not attempt to recapitulate history. Using lists, descriptions of photographs, a catalog of proverbs, images of streets, trains, ruins and riots, the film explores the territory of the recent past with a second generation perspective, distanced through time and reflection. With the visual field as a touchstone for a complex set of narrative associations, the film spins a tight web of memory, history, and experience. It is within this web that the film finds its wider significance: as a model for how daily life, history, first hand and second hand experience bind, through purpose or chance, to form identity itself.

As It Was Revealed Unto Jeroen Eisinga (1998) 16mm, 35mm, , 8 min

Genre: Experimental

Keywords: Environment & Nature, Ethnic / Multicultural

A picturesque view of a country road gives way to an idyllic tableau of a whitewashed farmhouse, in front of which sits a buxom woman dressed in Dutch folk costume holding a chubby bare baby, whom she cheerfully chuckles. Russian sacred music. Mother and child gaze serenely smiling, straight at the camera. They ascend on high.

"The original footage of As it was Revealed Unto Jeroen Eisinga was 16mm negative film. For the filming, I hired an Aerial Platform to lift the woman and her child (my actors) up in front of their background. But because we were standing on muddy soil, the platform was very wobbly and the safety mechanism became activated, and the machine refused to go up. To get around this, we disconnected the safety button. The ride up was very bumpy and hazardous. The platform was shaking from left to right, and the machine was hard to control. It went like 'BANG BANG BANG STOP OK A BIT MORE UP,' and so on. We were up there filming with a naked baby and her mom, sitting at half a meter near the edge of the platform with the guard rail removed so that it wouldn't block the view. There were also two giant heaters blowing heat at the actors to prevent the baby from catching a cold (it was in November and near freezing), and there were three other crew members on the platform as well. I was honestly afraid the whole thing would capsize, and we were at 15 meters above the ground! The original footage we shot was shocking and didn't give the smooth image I had hoped for. So later I decided to slow the image down to make it all look smoother. In order to do that, I needed to make an inter-positive print and after that a new negative, but because of the amount of detail in the film (especially the checkered pattern in the woman's dress) I decided to have an inter-positive made on 35mm and a new negative on 35mm as well. I wanted to have as little loss of quality as possible. I tried a 16mm print from the 35mm negative, but the quality and the colors looked horrible. So I made a 35mm print for projection. I projected it only once in The Netherlands and the quality looked amazing. With some films the quality doesn't matter that much, but with this one I really wanted the audience to get into a religious state of mind or mood, and the beautiful quality and the size of the projection helps to achieve this feeling." -J.E.

In just 35 minutes the film manages to examine root causes, analyze attitudes, suggest alternatives, and firmly confront conflicts which make the usual finite conclusions so simplistic .... It's excellent, quite literally the best of its kind, and should be seen by everyone." -- Helen Mackintosh, Time Out "RAPE is a rare film for its refusal to co-opt a feminist subject with a reactionary patriarchal form ...." -- B. "JoAnn Elam's LIE BACK AND ENJOY IT is an absorbing eight-minute dialectical film about the politics of representation. More specifically, it examines the politics of filmic representation of women under patriarchy .... An undergraduate male student paid it a true compliment in declaring that he can no longer look at a woman in a film without thinking about the consequences of the filmmaker's use of her as a person and as a spectacle .... The film is endowed with remarkable structural and rhetorical lucidity .... Its image track consists of technologically manipulated images of women, and some printed titles. Its soundtrack consists of a dialogue between a Man (a filmmaker) and a Woman (of whom he's going to make a film) .... Everyone who watches movies with women in them ought to see it." -- Claudia Gorbman, Jump Cut

Illuminated Texts (1982) 16mm, color, 176 min

Genre: Experimental

"A very demanding work of great complexity and rigor, ILLUMINATED TEXTS presents itself as a great debate between nature and technology, unity and dissolution, the divine and demonic, and irrecoverable past and the terrible velocity of time. Following on Elder's previous film, the autobiographical ART OF WORLDLY WISDOM, and the structural essay in history, 1857: FOOL's GOLD, ILLUMINATED TEXTS reenacts this time on a single site, both the task of constructing a self and the progression of historical agony. Although prolix in his use of texts--acted one, superimposed on the image, spoken in voiceovers and proliferate in the range of his imagery, Elder has structured ILLUMINATED TEXTS classically as inexorable movement from paradise to apocalypse, of in the formal terms, the film uses from plenitude to fragmentation. It is a sign of Elder's continuing commitment to a romantic sensibility making all his movies that the most horrific section of ILLUMINATED TEXTS, its apocalyptic conclusion is also the most stunning 45 minutes Elder has so far committed to film." --Bart Testa, Canadian Images, 1983

Chemical transformations of the image are wedded with electrical modifications to produce a fantasia of vibrantly colored alchemical forms that suggest an erotic wonder at all the world's surfaces, including many historical sites in Germany, the subject of Elder's boyhood fantasies, and of vineyards in Europe and America, which Elder uses as the sign of the goodness of the created world. The use of aleatory processes extends this faith into the making of the film. The subject of the film is what is gained, and what is lost, through these transformations.... The loss of innocence is wedded to the deepening of wisdom (and while we appreciate the ultimate richness such transformations bring, we also mourn what is lost in the process). Modern technologies are used to the ends of Magick.

Permutations and Combinations (1976) 16mm, color, 7.5 min

Genre: Experimental

Keywords: Structural

Aleatory procedures are used to create movement at the points of fusion of the still images of which the film is constituted. For this reason, all movements within the film are completely reversible. This reversibility is extended into the film's overall structure, as the film is formed into a loop -- a closed container for the film's chance elements. Such a structure, I believe, results in the complete elimination of all vestiges of drama from the film. Hence this film is a companion piece to SHE IS AWAY. The sounds of the film, though determined in their occurrence by specific features of the image line, appear to form their own internal patterns which phenomenally exist in counterpoint with the patternings of the images.

This is a film about Images (visual and psychological). Flesh (sensuality), and Voice (as a revelation and as a textural element in the film). The pictures range back and forth from the completely spontaneous to very formal choreography. The voice track, a collage edited into thematic sequences from a mass of interviews and informal discussions, gives an inner portrait of men and women candidly revealing their relationships. It is a non-story-telling feature film, a structured interplay of sound, image and sensual tensions. "... the mind is subtly lured to make personal associations between visual and aural elements, and the viewer becomes a third element to the interplay. For those for whom the chemistry works, IMAGE will be a psychologically fascinating film." -- Rich, Variety

Knit Knit Sundown Salon, The (2004) , min

Curator Fritz Haeg invited me to collaborate on an art event celebrating knitting and handcraft, to be held at hes LA-based art space, "Sundown Salon," in February of 2004. The daylong event included art installations, performances and a film/video screening. Guests were invited to bring projects to work on and wear clothes they'd made. I produced this video as documentation of the event.

Sewn Film Performance (2003) , min

I cut several Super-8 films that I had previously made into one or two foot strips. I then altered them through means of handcraft: I sewed bits of fabric onto them, and painted them, and cut some of them in half vertically in order to sew mis-matched halves together. The performance consisted of a live video of my hands feeding strips of Super-8 film into a film projector- this video image was shown to the left of the projected film strips. The soundtrack was simply the sound of the film projector's motor. The video provides documentation of the performance, and shows what the audience saw. During the duration of the performance, I was positioned on the floor, sitting within the crowd.

A fixed camera faces a window. At first the window reflects the studio in which the recording is taking place, but as the sun moves round it clears to reveal the garden which the studio overlooks. A slow natural dissolve from interior to exterior during which nature reasserts itself (plus a nod to 'Rear Window' as we become aware of activity in the house opposite). Sound is a mix of the ambient: birdsong, planes flying over, noise from neighboring houses--and studio noises: radio, footsteps, water being boiled and tea being made, phone ringing (but not being answered).

Earl of Aberdeen's Collar, After TL (In Memory of Robert Breer) (2011) DVD NTSC, b/w, 1.5 min

Genre: Experimental

In 1829, Thomas Lawrence painted a portrait of George Hamilton-Gordon, 4th Earl of Aberdeen, which the National Portrait Gallery included it in its 2010 exhibition of Lawrence's portraits and also used as the poster for the show. Most days I saw the poster in the underground and my eye always went straight to the collar of the Earl's shirt, which shows above his cravat and looks like something Lawrence has simply tossed off in a display of painterly virtuosity. I wondered if it really had been a one-off or the best of several tries. With this in mind, I cut a collar-shaped stencil from a reproduction of the painting and printed around 30 copies, all of which turned out different to a greater or lesser degree; these variations form the basis of this simple animation. I meant it to be silent, but one day the radio was playing in the studio. As I clicked the mouse to run through what I'd decided was the finished film, the radio began broadcasting a performance by Malian singer Oumou Sangare and her band which, spookily, seemed in synch with the rhythms of the film. Next day I tuned in to a repeat of the programme and recorded just the first minute or so of the song which I then adjusted to the length of the film. Midway through making the film I learned of the death of Robert Breer; I completed it with him in mind.

Genre: Narrative, Experimental

Keywords: films about films , structural

A 12 panel 16th/17th century lacquered Chinese screen - Spring Morning in the Han Palace - that I saw in the Santa Barbara Museum of Art in May 2013 provided both the inspiration and structure for this film, but when editing it I had in mind George Montgomery's film 'Lady in the Lake' in which the action is seen almost entirely through Marlowe's eyes. The line of dialogue that repeats 3 times is taken from Edward Dmytryk's 'Murder, My Sweet', in which Marlowe is played by Dick Powell.

Genre: Experimental

Keywords: films about films, structural

A photograph of a demonstration in Trafalgar Square which I took sometime in the 1970s (and which has been taped to my studio wall since then) comes very slowly into focus, accompanied by the sound of helicopters hovering overhead.

Trafalgar Square is overlooked by the National Gallery. I've no recollection of thinking this at the time, but it seems I chose to focus on 3 figures who would not look out of place in the background of any number of 16th or 17th century paintings that hang in the gallery.

'After RH' refers to Richard Hamilton's 1970 screenprint series 'Kent State'.

27 views of Mont Sainte-Victoire selected from around 60 made during one day in October 2014, these 27 views arranged in 3 groups of 9 and these 3 groups of 9 'shuffled' together according to not entirely pre-determined pattern; what starts out as a kind of 'mosaic', shifting continuously between close, medium and long shot, quickly breaks down, as views are 'used up', into isolated views separated by short bursts of black and black/white. The sound is a rhythmic, somewhat awkward clapping together with ambient sounds recorded on site.

Tilt (2008/2015) DVD NTSC, color, 4:10 min

Genre: Experimental

Keywords: arts & artists, films about film, structural

Made originally in 2008 in black and white and with a different soundtrack. The title refers to tilting the camera up to bring the horizon line down or down to bring it up and the film was prompted by seeing a documentary about John Ford which mentioned that in his framing, particularly in his westerns (e.g., 'She Wore a Yellow Ribbon') he would often alternate between a high and a low horizon, something which apparently he took from the paintings of Frederick Remington. The image could not be simpler: basically the 'frame' is divided in half horizontally. The film was 'scored' very precisely and in constructing it this 'score' was followed to the letter. In 2015 I revisited the film and added color. While working on it I changed upon a song by Kevin Coyne ('Porcupine People') that seemed oddly appropriate and took the liberty of 'lifting'2 or 3 lines from the song to construct a new soundtrack.

Keywords: films about film, found footage, structural

Description (Film Synopsis or Link to Synopsis): Filmed originally on Super 8mm in 1977 as 'Field- the Dutch Hostage Film'. Narrative played a supporting role to materiality and process (film as both object and subject). The film was transferred to digital video in 2007 and re-edited and given a soundtrack in 2015, thus becoming both a facsimile of the original and a new work. The soundtrack was pieced together from recordings made at the Roundhouse in London in 2009 during David Byrne's installation 'Playing the Building'.

Pareidolia (2012) DVD NTSC, color, 7:30 min

Genre: Animation, Experimental

Keywords: body, cameraless, family, history, philosophical , spiritual/mystical

Pareidolia is an abstract narrative exploring the landscape/architecture of the body as a container of memories. Layers of stories, dreams and memory fragments are interconnected like muscle fibers. The film uses bleached and distressed film stock, cut-paper puppets, stop-motion sets, hand-drawn animation, and various hybrid techniques. Through a re-imagining of family stories and life events, the film attempts to connect my experiences witnessing public cremations in India to my Great Grandmother's miraculous survival of a mass killing by Hungarian Nazis along the banks of the Danube in 1944.
