EFFIGY - SPECIMENS 4 TO 12 is composed of digitally animated photograms that were created by placing organic materials directly on unexposed 35mm film and flashing it with light. "The whole atmosphere of Effigy seems to be on some extreme precipice of human existence, either within the womb or at the first moments after one's death." -- Virgil Wong

I am fascinated by the technology of the nineteenth century, the birth of film and its inextricable link to the Victorian sensibility. The hallmark of this aesthetic lies in its tightly-laced obsession with detail and decoration, decorum and charm. All objects, from a memory quilt to a camera, were compulsively lavished with the same ornamental decorations. While on one level my modernity is repelled by this fussiness, on another level I feel oddly liberated by this outrageously sensual adornment of objects, regardless of their function. Yet the Victorian fixation on complicated patterning belies a fear of the empty space. I feel there is, within their flourishes, a language I must decipher. To get close enough, to get inside the design is to see patterns of desire, patterns of repression, a pattern that blossoms to encompass generations. --S. W.

Genre: Experimental

Keywords: Art & Artists

From time to time, there can be a brief fissure in daily experience. It's a sharp, decisive moment when you glimpse that which has always been perfectly hidden. The form is unanticipated - a shaft of light in an alley, a small hand movement, a look into a stranger's eye. It is heartbreaking and rapturous, disquieting and true. The interruption heals as quickly as it forms, and although you feel it in your body, unless you believe it in your heart, it disappears without trace. This piece is about rising and falling, aspiring to reach beyond one's grasp and the confinement of the mundane. --S. W.

Hu'n (Laceratons) (2004) DVD NTSC, color, 23 min

Genre: Experimental

Keywords: Comedy, History

Bright Sheng's powerful piece is an expression of his experiences during the Chinese Cultural Revolution. I interpret the music as a relentless recurring memory, a painful question that cannot find answer, and finally an examination of breath itself. "(Wills's) latest video is a departure of sorts. Based on Bright Sheng's modern orchestral composition of the same name, H'UN (LACERATIONS) finds Wills incorporating representational elements, combined with her signature photograms and abstract images. In Sheng's 23-minute piece, which is far more extroverted than the sound in Wills's previous films, she found an opportunity to break out of her typical styles, using everyday objects like a shoe or a cracker to illustrate the film noir-ish score with a touch of humor."
