As a dual video, this piece premiered in the "Building" curatorial at Central Booking, a NYC artspace on the Lower East Side / East Village, NYC, September, 2014.
MUSEUM BOARD: Directed by her older daughter, Ola Creston, age 10. who went on to act in legitimate theater and Hollywood films, Barbara Rosenthal and her younger daughter, Sena Clara Creston, age 8, who went on to become an electronic media artist, assemble scrap museum board cuttings from other Rosenthal projects, into a structure on the floor of their NY loft. Their cat and kitten participate in their own ways. This piece echoes several others in which Rosenthal finds creative use for scraps, including Bookmarks Exploded Library Project and Dirty Book, and several others using her children and animals, including News Corral and Nonsense Conversation. The original footage was shot in 1990 on VHS, then a single take was transferred to U-Matic in 2000, then the original was remastered in 2014.
NEWS CORRAL: With her usual silly-o-seriousness, Rosenthal attempts to corral her dog, Zeke, her old cat, Stripe, and her kitten, Tunafish, into her sculpture, News Corral, an open-form piling of Daily News on the floor of her loft at 727 Avenue of the Americas, NYC. The video is shot from her sleeping loft / office loft upper open space above the main floor, and the audio is her calling the "soo-eee" of animal-ranglers, and sounds of her pets as they comply or don't comply at their pleasure. The original footage was shot in 1990 on VHS, then a single take was transferred to U-Matic in 2000, then the original was remastered in 2014 as part of the "Building" curatorial at Central Booking, an artspace in New York, along with Rosenthal's 1985 video MUSEUM BOARD. The piece has yet to premiere at any video screening. Such delay is not atypical of this artist, who is known for making art as a primary function, whether or not, or when or if, it's ever shown. Asked about this, she says, "There will be plenty of time to show it after I'm dead, but only time now while alive to make it.
