Cartoons (1975) 16mm, color & b/w, 39.5 min

Genre: Animation, Experimental

Keywords: Films about Film, Media

CARTOONS, including AN ANGRY DIG, IT DAWN DOWN, THE CENTRAL FINGER, BEFORE THE FACT, THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF BENJAMIN FRANKIN, NEW YORK STATE PRIMARIES, and STILL AT WORK, is a series of playful films, each of which frames an aspect of the medium in an unlikely or ironical way. For instance, AN ANGRY DOG is handheld animation made from a Cracker Jack toy, and BEFOERE THE FACT, shows filmmaker Saul Levine with students trying to mimic exactly a previous tape recorded phrase and then trying to imitate each other imitating the recording. In IT DAWN DOWN an ordinary take-up reel is filmed as it spins making colorful and delicate patterns, even though the film is black and white. Each of the films presents a riddle or a joke about contemporary concepts in avant-garde film.
