Neil Welliver Painting in Maine (1980) 16mm, color, 27 min

Genre: Documentary, Experimental

Keywords: Art & Artists, Biography & Autobiography

Deep in the woods on a bright summer day we see Neil Welliver paint a small study of sunlight filtering over rocks and ferns through leaves of birches reflected in a quiet pool. Later in his barn-studio he translates the study into an 8 by 8 foot painting. He paints nature doing her own thing, not only in summer but spring, fall and winter as well. He lives in a rambling farmhouse with a large vegetable garden, his electricity supplied by windmills. He talks about landscape painting, the earlier kind and the kind he is doing. A straightforward film about an extraordinary artist.
