P (1999) 16mm, color, 6 min

Genre: Documentary

Keywords: Body, History, Psychology & Mental Health, Science & Medicine

P (rectum spectrum), a retrospect on shit & its history. Many cultures in many times have used human excreta as components of medicines and magic potions. In our culture today these materials still have great magical power. They are some of the commonest substances around, and yet because of what they represent to us and remind us of, they repel, shock and offend. P has the power to short-circuit trains of thoughts repressed by the viewer, sparking new realizations.

Eyetoon (1968) 16mm, color, 8 min

Genre: Experimental

Keywords: Body

"The sea, tranquil and violent, is the ultimate symbol for Jerry Abrams' EYETOON and the ultimate equivalent to making love -- his concern in this short and visually dazzling film. Abrams contrasts the rushing faces of New York and a highway juggernaut with the peaceful joining of bodies in a Gjon Mili-like stroboscopic sequence -- always with a burbling, flashing maelstrom of emotions underlying and double-exposing with the bodies. It is visually lovely, technically first-rate and impossible to ignore. The graphic sex is economically handled." -- John L. Wasserman, San Francisco Chronicle "The film EYETOON would seem to be the perfect synthesis of the metaphysical, spiritual and sexual feelings of a sensitive experimental filmmaker." -- Reverend Earl Shagley

From Romance to Ritual (1985) Super 8 to Video, color, 20 min

Genre: Experimental

Keywords: Body, Erotic, Ethnic / Multicultural

This film is formed around several scenes of women telling stories to the camera of their sexual history and experience. This material is intercut and juxtaposed with related footage concerning girls and their growing up, memory and the learning process and the received truth of history lessons. This film as a whole makes for an uncomfortable fit between women's personal experience and the official dogma of our culture's history. The filming style is of the ethno-graphic film without the expert observer and of the home movie without the father.

Martina's Playhouse (1989) Color, 30 min

Genre: Experimental

Keywords: Body, Psychology & Mental Health

A film about the riddles of our sexual construction and the complexities of play. "Since the mid-'70s, feminist filmmakers have taken up the gauntlet of visual representation, challenging sexist imagery with new paradigms of difference. One of the wittiest contenders is Ahwesh, whose film, MARTINA'S PLAYHOUSE, premiered at the Collective for Living Cinema. If the unprecedented success of Pee-Wee Herman suggests (let's hope) a potential crisis in masculinity, then MARTINA'S PLAYHOUSE signals that the equally artificial construct of femininity is ready to explode." -- Manohla Dargis, The Village Super 8 to Video.

Genre: Experimental

Keywords: Body, Literary & Theatre, Psychology & Mental Health

Forming a trilogy with the Deadman (1990) and The Color of Love (1994), Nocturne features Anne Kugler, Bradley Eros and Karen Sullivan in a minatory scenario in film and Pixilvision, combining plot elements culled from Mario Bava's The Whip and the Flesh (1963) with writings on sexuality and violence from Kathy Acker, the Marquis de Sade and Steven Shaviro. A psychological horror film based on fear and disquietude and the anticipation of violence. . . among the shadows of the night and the lurid dreams of imagination, with no clear division between fact and hallucination, between life and death, between dread and desire.

She Puppet (2001) DVD NTSC, color, 17 min

Genre: Experimental

Keywords: Body, Found Footage, Philosophical, Technology

An homage to and commentary on the female action adventure game Tomb Raider and its busty virtual superstar Laura Croft. I played the game on the my computer and simultaneously recorded the gameplay onto videotape. Then I treated the material as "found footage" and recut it in order to rethink the game and consider questions about women, virtual bodies, role-playing, identity issues and fandom. Ignoring the original drive of action, I make Lara explore the game environment at the edges of the programming world created for her. The limited inventory of Lara's gestures and the militaristic scenarios of the game are considered from a feminist perspective in analyzing the symbolic feminine and the popular culture that has sprung up around Lara Croft. Quotations are from three authors who philosophize the alien, the clone and the orphan: The Book of Disquiet by Fernando Pessoa, The Female Man by Joanna Russ and the jazz mystic Sun Ra.

Sluts and Goddesses Video Workshop or How to be a Goddess in 101 Easy Steps, The (1992) VHS NTSC, color, 52.00 min

Genre: Documentary, Experimental

Keywords: Body, Erotic

It is said if you follow the video carefully you will "be happier and healthier, improve your sex life, and even create miracles..." THE SLUTS AND GODDESSES VIDEO WORKSHOP OR HOW TO BE A SEX GODDESS IN 101 EASY STEPS is a humorous, absurd, heartfelt and worshipful look at SEX. This tape, featuring an all woman cast, is made especially for women to inspire more sensual and sexual pleasure in their lives. THE SLUTS AND GODDESSES VIDEO WORKSHOP OR HOW TO BE A SEX GODDESS IN 101 EASY STEPS utilizes the forbidden and ancient roles of women to achieve personal transformation. Guided through this adventure by eroticist Annie Sprinkle and her team of "Transformation Facilitators" one encounters the more exotic ways to stimulate pleasure such as: flagellation by oak leaves, gender bending, body shaving, sword dancing, ritual body painting, contortions, menstrual blood, female ejaculation, rhythmic deep breathing, primal screaming, group masturbation, passionate safe sex and more in this guided adventure. This dazzling video challenges the boundaries of "femininity," of the "good girl/bad girl" myths and the definitions of sexual "norms." It is meant to unleash women's sexual powers and remind them that sex is sacred. It is blatant and undyingly explicit, an "eye fuck." Annie Sprinkle and Maria Beatty are daring and bold in their approach to a new (or perhaps ancient) freedom of the body.

Imaging Her Erotics: Carolee Schneemann (1993) VHS NTSC, color, 5.00 min

Keywords: Body

The result of year's collaboration between Beatty and Schneemann. Beatty's original video sequences intertwine with Schneemann's own vocabulary and visual style, creating a cumulative history from Schneemann's recurrent themes and symbols. Schneemann's command of painting, sculpture, performance and video art, as channels of self-alteration and transgression, provide a provocative look at feminist art history and depictions of sexuality. Her works through the past three decades are central to the art of the 1990s -- especially the prevalent view of the body as a site of identity and political struggle. Beatty has created a unique, feminist alternative to the traditional "portrait of an artist."

Genre: Documentary, Experimental

Keywords: Body

Nothing happens and everything happens-- in the simplest of experiences there is a complexity and a vitality unknown and unfelt until the moment when we begin to let its wonder filter into us and flow through our bodies, our minds and our souls. When that happens the ordinary world becomes extraordinary-- the magic of the universe is within each moment and act perceived in as many levels as we can contain. NOTHING HAPPENED THIS MORNING attempts to capture this state of unconsciousness in the first twenty minutes of an ordinary--extraordinary morning.

Blicklust (1992) 16mm, color, 18 min

Genre: Experimental

Keywords: Body, Erotic

Sometimes I ask myself what KIND of films I make + I think they are horror films. Do I make horror films? In 1991 I received a non-identifiable and worn out super-8 S/M Porno film, which shows a woman tied up in various manners + I couldn't resist. I knew that I had film material of surgery + I mixed the tied-up woman with the surgery material confrontationally + still a few more + and to 2/3 of a drawer of found footage until Blicklust-end. The "Pumping-screen" films THE MURDER MYSTERY + BLICKLUST are the first two of a planned six-part series which reflects on sexuality + violence. Basically, I show what I always see on TV, my favorite source. I like to watch TV without sound + with other manipulations. I watch restlessly the real + fake dead bodies. They are always there + I have simply gotten used to the fact that TV is a pump of corpses. In fact, I like better the filtered reality than the actual one. I prefer distance rather than closeness.

The picture is funny and ever so wise." -- Howard Thompson, The New York Times "A superb control of the cinema medium with a visual richness and an elegance approached by no other film viewed by the judges." -- Bruce Conner, Maurice Girodias, Arthur Knight, First Erotic Film Festival "THE GOLDEN POSITIONS is a rich, warm, clear statement of humanism. Hermes Bird (1979) 16mm, color, 10.5 min

Genre: Experimental

Keywords: Body

"This is the secret that will not stay hidden/this secret that is no secret / Here is the wonder of the god in man / Here is the dangling flower of Eros." So begins the poetry sequence on the soundtrack of this very intimate film. HERMES BIRD is a celebration and an apotheosis of the masculine miracle: the transformative powers of the phallus, revealed as a phenomenon of glowing beauty and wonder. Because the film occurs in extreme slow motion one has the opportunity to witness for the first time in cinema the delicate pulsations and tremors and changes of the penis as it grows erect, until at last, reaching outward and upward, it takes flight toward its climax. The filmmaker-poet has written a group of lyrical poems for the sound of the film. They are spoken by the poet, and they sing praises for the radiant masculine mystery of the "sacred firebird," the "holy acrobat shaped for surprise" which is every man's pride and, hopefully, his joy.

The film is written and narrated by James Broughton, and photographed by Joel Singer. This film was crucial to my understanding of composition, to my desire for an encyclopedic construction (the world "out" there), and reaffirmed my allegiance to rhythm, the rhythm of body-nerve-mind. "Juxtapositions of light made this dream consumed image between the penny arcades & mirrors reflecting masturbating naked brain of magnetized nitrous screens crackling is like pulp beside dummy circumstance." - Bruce Andrews, Jimmy and Lucy's House of K "THE RHYTHM!!!! the rhythm, like jazz, comes out of & returns to the BODY (the animal nature of film!, illustrated by the organic reticulation patterns of the self-processed segments): the 'meanings' of the shots (constantly undermined thru highly intentional overload): ... all films are 'different EVERY viewing' but this one more specifically so: colorfully constructed along lines of color: associative values emerge as if by chance, like memory, fleeting but there, reemerging altered: all films different every viewing but this one more intentionally so: takes several screenings to even know where it begins ...." -- Henry Hills, Cinemanews

Perversely and equally inspired by de Sade's Justine and Vertov's sentences about the satiric detective advertisement, MAYHEM is my attempt to create a film in which Sound is the Character and to do so focusing on sexuality and the erotic. Not so much to undo the entrapment (we fear what we desire; we desire what we fear), but to frame fate, show up the rotation, upset the common, and incline our contradictions toward satisfaction, albeit conscious.

The original material for the film was made from black and white video tapes of nude models -- the result of work sessions over a period of three months. The best sequences were taken and fed into a quantizer, which transfer the black and white tapes to color. The quantizer is sophisticated equipment: color complexity and juxtaposition can be altered to a high degree. A 16mm color film was made from the screen of the quantizer. Concentration in the film is of one and sometimes two models continually moving through the frame; as the film progresses, the figures become more and more abstract. The music I programmed and recorded live from ARP synthesizer and it consists of basic rhythms which change slowly as the images in the film evolve.

A video portrait of my friend, Susan Weisser and of her rapport with 13 year old son Billy and seventeen year old daughter Amanda. The video, divided in two sections used as a premise the reconstruction of her daily rituals with first the son and then the daughter. Enactments, accounts, confidences and spirited arguments freely crisscross each other within the dynamic that my presence and that of the camera create. Great opportunities ensued for live tensions in the framing of sounds and visuals; a sort of enchanted construction from the fanciful revelations of the everyday. A response to a newspaper account of a self-inflicted Caesarian section. "... a daring yet subtle reflection on the anomalies of birth and self-mutilation." -- Kate Regan, San Francisco Chronicle "The film alternates medical footage ... with clips of the news report - bringing into question issues of invasion of privacy, voyeurism, control over one's body and the use of technology in situations that may not require it. Zweig's text ... is as chilling as the images ...." -- Will Torphy, Artweek "... extraordinary and disturbing ...." -- Larry Kardish, Museum of Modern Art, NY "Like Goya ... overpowering imagery floods the viewer ... a break-through for social and poetic filmmaking ... [and] a courageous advancement in the history of cinema." -- Joyce Wieland Awards: SF Art Institute Film Festival, 1985; Ann Arbor Film Festival, 1985. Commentary by the British poet, George Barker. An analogical pilgrimage evokes the terrors and splendors of the human body as the undiscovered, mysterious continent. Extreme magnification increases the ambiguity of the visuals, tongue-in-cheek commentary counteracts or reinforces their sexual implications. The method is that used by the imagist-symbolist poet.

Film of Her, The (1996) 16mm, black and white, 12 min

Genre: Experimental

Keywords: body, erotic, Found Footage

"...Morrison's THE FILM OF HER is based on the story of a Library on Congress clerk who saved a vaultful of paper reels, documenting the earliest days of cinema, from the incinerator. A gorgeous tribute to the art form's origins, this 12-minute short is anchored by the memory of this man, who has fixed in his mind since boyhood the image of a woman he saw in an early porn film. 'The Film of Her' is what drives the clerk to save the films, this collective memory, and it also serves as the focal point for Morrison's thoughts on personal experience and the happenstance of history. Drawing comparisons between the primordial ooze and the elemental flicker of a light projector, or between Lumiere babes, magic a la Melies, and the gears of industry, Morrison reminds us that even the most brilliant and brave creations begin as cherished ideas nurtured in dedicated imaginations and subjected to the whims of chance." - Hazel-Dawn Dumpert, L.A. "A study in genital differentiation and psychic tumult." --Candy O' Brien "What you will be renting now is just what was filmed, uncut, unedited. Projection instructions: The film remains on two reels (A and B), requiring two projectors, to be projected simultaneously at sound speed. The film on the first projector fills the screen, while the image on the second projector is approximately one half smaller and fills the middle of the screen, superimposing on the first image. This can be done either by using different lenses, or by placing one projector closer to the screen. They begin simultaneously, though due to slight differences in speed of each projector, they end slightly different. I've added black leader to compensate for that. When both images are off, turn projectors off. I suggest if possible to use to of the same kind of projectors, and check them before projection. I also suggest that since this is the first time of veiwing this, to put Reel A on the largest screen, and Reel B on the inner, smaller screen, making sure each film is being projected heads out. To complete the cycle, a radio must be hooked up to a PA system, with a nice cross-section of psychic tumult like an AM rock station, turned on and played loud. Also (optional) color gels may be used in front of projector and moved and alternated by hand during the film. PLEASE return this film as it was send to you, whole. Thank you, Barbara Rubin. P.s., PLEASE PROJECT MY FILM IN THE IMAGE IN WHICH IT WAS CREATED-- i.e. EXACTLY IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE PROJECTION INSTRUCTIONS!" --B.R.

Ola Writes the Alphabet (1982 - DVD Remaster 2004) DVD, b&w, 16 min

Genre: Documentary, Experimental

Keywords: arts & artists, biography & autobiography, body, children & youth, family, personal/diary/journal, philosophical , psychology & mental health , science & medicine, structural, technology

'Ola Writes the Alphabet' is a 'decisive moment' in both video and child development by a consummate artist of video vert. At her mother's prompting, Ola Creston, the artist's daughter at age 3, recalls some letters perfectly, but others only with great creative latitude, letting us see into the development of letter-forms in a young brain. An extremely straight-forward, observational presentation with no filmmaker-type interference, this DVD was originally shot in 1982 on black and white 1/2" open reel videotape. It is a boundary-crossing work that can find audiences among child and family psychologist, neurologists, linguists, educator, parents and children themselves, well beyond this artist's usual base within video history and the avant-garde.

Note: sound on film. "[Jack Smith] has graced the anarchic liberation of new American cinema with graphic and rhythmic power worthy of the best of formal cinema. He has attained for the first time in motion pictures a high level of art which is absolutely lacking in decorum; and a treatment of sex which makes us aware of the restraint of all previous filmmakers. "He has shown more clearly than anyone before how the poet's license includes all things, not only of spirit, but also of flesh; not only of dreams and of symbol, but also of solid reality. In no other art but the movies could this have so fully been done; and their capacity was realized by Smith." -- Film Culture "During its final deliberation, the selection jury decided to state explicitly that the majority of its members recognized the aesthetical and experimental qualities of the film FLAMING CREATURES by Jack Smith, but had to ascertain unanimously that the showing of it was impossible in regard to Belgian laws." -- Program Notes, Third International Experimental Film Competition, Knokke-Le-Zoute, Belgium, 1964 Awards: Fifth Independent Film Award, Film Culture; Prix Film Maudit, Third Int'l Film Exposition, Knokke-Le-Zoute, Belgium, 1964. I Was A Male Yvonne De Carlo (1967-70s) 16mm, black and white, 28 min

Genre: Experimental

Keywords: Body, Queer / Bi / Trans

Note: Sound on CD. Restored by Jerry Tartaglia, 1997. "I WAS A MALE YVONNE DECARLO, which stars Smith himself, takes its title from one of his live performances: I Was a Male Yvonne DeCarlo for the Lucky Landlord Underground, staged in the early 1980s. Shot mainly during the late '60s and edited a decade or more later, I WAS A MALE YVONNE DECARLO is one of several films and slide shows that feature the filmmaker as a mock celebrity. It opens with the excerpt from No President originally called 'Marsh Gas of Flatulandia' -- several minutes of black and white footage of steam escaping from manholes segues to an interior scene of various creatures emerging from dry ice vapors - then shifts to show the filmmaker, clad in a leopard skin jump suit, attended by a nurse as he sits amidst the detritus of his duplex loft on Grand and Greene Street. "Smith waits under the visible movie lights, drumming the fingers. A fan presents him with a black and white glamour shot (Smith in profile, posed with a sinuously curved dagger) to autograph as the Warhol Superstar Ondine, dressed entirely in black leather, snaps his picture. Violence erupts as the nurse takes out a whip to discipline the star's fans. When a female creature pulls out the same dagger depicted in the glamour shot, Smith jumps up and shakes the weapon from her hand. The action is post-scripted with footage of a steam shovel patrolling the rubble where the Broadway Central hotel once stood." -- J. Hoberman Note: Sound on tape from the Jack Smith Record Collection (Jerry Tartaglia). Brand new distribution print courtesy of the Gladstone Gallery

DEPARTURE(definition):1. a departing; going away; leaving 2. a starting out, as on a trip or new course of action; as, political action is a new departure for labor.3. a deviation or turning aside (from something.)4. [archaic] death.5. in nautical usage, a)the distance of a ship due east or west from the meridian of its starting point. b) a ship's position in latitude and longitude at the start of a voyage from which the dead reckoning is begun. I was inspired by the myriad meanings that define the word departure, and by my interest in the stucture of Chinese ideogram to dpart, which had 4 changing phases of the over time before becoming obsolete and removed from the dictionaries. Traditional Chinese calligraphy has its own critical criteria concerning line and composition. Foremost is the relationship between the horizontal and vertical strokes that make up the form of each character. This particular character reminds me of a doorwar or gate... Arriving at a sense of balance and harmony in the exectuion of calligraphy is similar to the struggle of Homo spiens to maintain equilibrium as they walk upright; vocalize; and usher in human consciousness. DEPARTURE indicates this body-mind connection we see the protagonist's interior view; her process into walking' and various forms that correspond to the ideogram's shapes (snake, cattle gate posts)

Genre: Experimental

Keywords: body, erotic

New restoration of the original 16mm collaged print - May 2007. Part of "Autobiographical Trilogy". Filming begun in 1964. This self- shot erotic film remains a controversial classic. With awards at Cannes (1968), the Yale Film Festival (1992) and showings at museums and Universities internationally, Fuses has nevertheless encountered censorship over the years. "[A]notorious masterpiece, a silent celebration in color of heterosexual love making, the film unifies erotic energies within a domestic environment through cutting, super- imposition and layering of abstract impressions scratched into the celluloid itself... Fuses succeeds perhaps more than any other film in objectifying the sexual streamings of the body's mind" - The Guardian

Fall in Frame (2009) DVD NTSC, color, 18 mins min

Genre: Experimental

Keywords: Body

Fall in Frame opens with the image of a young woman looking at herself and her camera in the mirror, each revealed as she unwraps a sheet to uncover the lens. She sets up the filming space by staging both set and camera and manipulates the light by handling the blind, each action weighted with its sound. Filming herself falling asleep and awakening, in and out of consciousness, the woman switches the camera on and off. Deliberation and indifference at once determine her actions as she sits at the table pouring tea, impassively combs strands of long hair or lounges on a bed. Meticulously constructing her own confinement, she repeatedly checks herself in mirror and camera, all the while moving in and out of frame. With an even paced performance the woman proceeds to stitch her apron to the tablecloth with her hair. As she stands, the crockery comes crashing down. Gathered together into her dress, the debris is then thrown out of the window. Outside, in the garden, objects and camera are piled onto the cloth that becomes a trail as it is attached to her dress. From suburban street to sea-shore, camera and trail follow her. In Fall in Frame the materiality of the filmmaking process is explored within a constrained performance that blurs the split between the physical and consciousness. The film ends where it starts with the sheet around the camera, shutting out the image.

All Women Are Equal (1972) 16mm, Black and White, 15 min

Genre: Documentary, Experimental

Keywords: Biography, Body, Personal / Diary / Journal, Queer / Bi / Trans

All Women Are Equal is a black and white 15- minute documentary filmed in Nottingham England in 1972, about Paula, a male to female transsexual made by veteran lesbian filmmaker Marguerite Paris (1934-2007). This very early and non-exploitative representation of an ordinary well- adjusted transgendered person is historically significant for its treatment of the subject. While other films may have depicted drag queens and other performers (such as Frank Simon's 1968 feature The Queen), they were not made by a women. Also unique is that Paris produced, directed, shot and edited this film, which, unlike there other representations, allows the individual to tell her own personal story, without resorting to spectacle or focusing on performativity. Through Paris's lens, see Paula fixing her make up and discussing the difficulty of living as a woman and meeting other trans people. The discussion is remarkably detailed and offers incredible insights into both the time and Paul's individual psyche. The film was shot on East German 16mm B&W reversal film stock, and edited with cement splices. The sound was recorded on 1/4" reel to reel tape, then transferred to mag stock, and finally united with the edited reversal original, which had been mag striped.

Cosmetic Emergency (2008) 35mm, DVD_NTSC, Color, 8 min

Genre: Animation, Experimental

Keywords: Body, Found Footage, Political Social Activism

"Cosmetic Emergency" explores the idea of beauty through a collage of live action and lyrical animations. A free-form take on the current trend of cosmetic obsession and the immortal quality of painting, the film searches for "what's on the inside". Topical news stories (such as the US military offering free cosmetic surgery)and musical film sequences are created with paint-on-glass animation, found footage and documentary techniques. The music was commissioned for the film. Selected musicians, including New Zealand's Hip-Hop artist, "Coco Solid" and "Half Japanese" found Jad Fair, wrote and recorded humorously cynical songs about the cosmetic craze. Also included is a rare appearance by the Dutch Ambassador of Cosmetic Surgery, Marijke Helwegen.

While strolling around in Greenpoint, Brooklyn one sunny afternoon, casually we entered a Rite Aid pharmaceutical to unknowingly discover an 'untold treasure trove'. At first glance it seems like any other drug store full of 'gadgets and gizmos aplenty', these artificial delights illuminated by the cheap industrial lights above surround a spectacular giant disco ball. This spherical misplaced object mirroring the culture of today, draws your attention to the grandiose dome shaped interior of yesteryear, a former theatre with its original ornate wall reliefs and elaborate balconies once overlooking the dramatized stories of the past, now hidden beneath the facade of cheap house hold 'whozits and whatzits. The ceiling black resembling the night sky, the shoddy store lights twinkling like the celestial heavens, your eyes move down to the aisles that become infinite spaces of information...the shelves being an orderly symmetrical system that display the complexities of modern necessities. You are confronted with the question of..'look at this stuff isn't it neat wouldn't you think my collections complete.?' sung to you in a satirical manner by Lee Kyle, a strong, physically masculine, tattooed, bearded man taking on the persona of the little mermaid, brings to light the social, cultural ideas and expectations of what it is to be a man or a woman.'wouldn't you think Im a girl, a girl who has everything thing'. In a ever dissatisfied, all attainable, disposable A.D.D world..'but who cares no big deal I wont more'

Genre: Experimental

Keywords: Body, Erotic, Queer, Bi, Trans

In a toxic haze of red, white and blue gloss paint, an artificial forest opens up, a sanctuary where baroque meets pop, fairytale meets grunge, purity meets sin. The iconic colors red, white and blue are re appropriated as nature. We find our current global climate coming to a climax, fueling our desire for an alternative reality. We're desperately seeking a new spirituality, a new mythology in a 'too rich' too attainable, technological age. This synthetic fantasy landscape channels the global anxieties of the past and present. This man-made forest belongs to the magical world of the fetish, the pre-ordained nature of artificial relics. Where disconnected identities are placed in a perverse unfamiliar foreign territory. A Place where everyone is a tourist.

Phantom Rhapsody (2010) DVD PAL, b & w, 19 min

Genre: Experimental

Keywords: body, films about film

Distinctive in its stark use of black and white and reminiscent of early silent cinema, this film is composed of a series of theatrical side-show 'magic' acts. Three women stage tricks of appearance and disappearance, punctuated by trumpet, cello and drums. Interchanging between the roles of magician, nude and filmmaker, they perform the preparation of an image and the prepared or completed image, drawing on iconic paintings. 16mm camera techniques as well as performance techniques with props- such as cloaks, drapery, curtains, wigs, mirrors, frames, wands and lighting - determine what is visible or absent in the film frame. With its surrealist sensibilities of artifice and reality and insistence on doubling and substitution, Phantom Rhapsody probes the notion of identity as surface that can be worn or shed and which can extend beyond the boundary of the skin, into the light in the room, the set and the props.

Genre: Animation, Experimental

Keywords: body

YOU BE MOTHER (1990) 16mm col, sound, 7 min- You Be Mother uses stop-frame animation to disrupt the traditional orders of animate and inanimate, the fluid and the solid. An hallucinatory space is set up when a frozen image of the artist's face is projected onto weighty pieces of crockery atop a table. Ears, eyes, nose and mouth, all become spatially dislocated as a determined hand begins to reposition, decant and mix. Events unfold to the amplified sounds of grinding, pouring and stirring. MILK AND GLOSS (1993) 16mm col, sound, 10 min- An interior landscape is scrutinized, and an apparent rational calm is revealed as suffocating. Milk and Glass is an evocation journey from surface to interior- a black-coated mirror, the hollow of a bowl, a cavernous throat a brush demarcates a line of lip on a flat surface, a mouth doubles up with the bowl and is virtually spoon-fed till it chokes. BACKCOMB (1995) 16mm col, sound, 6 min- In Backcomb the demonic is unleashed on domestic space. It takes the form of two of femininity's mildest tokens, hair and embroidery, that serve here in the creation of sexualised surrealist experience. Within the claustrophobic space of a table-lay, a forceful and erectile mass of hair comes alive and slithers across its surface. The hair probes into vessels and punches through the cloth finally order overturns and all smashes to the ground. MIRRORED MEASURE (1996) 16mm, b&w, sound, 10 min- Mirrored Measure features two women separated by a generation. The older woman ceremoniously lays a table - she repeatedly spreads a cloth and smooths it out. The table is set and glasses and jug filled with water. A balanced and controlled ritual follows in which the jug is passed round and water is repeatedly sipped. Water becomes the lens through which we see and the medium through which the protagonists connect. The sense of connectivity is abruptly severed when the first glass tumbles.

Genre: Experimental

Keywords: biography, body, personal /diary / journal, queer / bi / trans

The 17 minute film is an intimate document of a person as he dying from an infection associated with HIV. It has been edited to create the illusion that the viewer is looking at camera "rushes" or unedited "dailies" of a movie. This editorial choice affords the viewers an unencumbered emotional response to what they are seeing on the screen. See For Yourself is a silent film, shot largely in the San Francisco Bay Area in the Autumn of 1993. This film's subject is the filmmaker's friend, David Kline, who requested that this film be made in order for "people to see for themselves what A.I.D.S. look like." Ecce Homo (1989) DVD NTSC, color, 7 min

Genre: Experimental

Keywords: body, queer / bi / trans

Ecce Homo (Behold the Man) interweaves images from Jean Genet's masterpiece, Un Chant d'Amour with images from gay male sex films. It forces the viewer to question the point of view in looking at "pornographic" images. American A.I.D.S. hysteria during the 1980s portrayed gay sex a pornographic, politically incorrect, sinful, or, at best, a public health hazard. Ecce Homo asks whether the taboo is against gay sex or against seeing gay sex. Art of the American Century: The Whitney Museum of American Art, 2000. 1990 Atlanta International Film Festival Best Experimental Film Berlin International Film Festival Official Selection, 1990 "Ecce Homo makes it all worthwhile. BY NIGHT - NO STILLNESS is a study in black, where black becomes a radiant space within which one finds inner light. Taking its cues from Rothko's last paintings, BY NIGHT - NO STILLNESS homes in on the luminosity that emerges when you enter a dark place. Dancer Miriam Parker and percussionist Hamid Drake perform within a video projections of a black and yellow painting, on Parker's body, by the painter/filmmaker, Katy Martin. The piece explores movement in relation to the painted gesture and fragmented, dreamlike sculptural space.

I wanted to find a voice for the pain, an acknowledgement of the courage involved in choosing to have an abortion--a voice I felt had been silenced in our culture. "A haunting personal statement that continues to grow in the mind long after the viewing.' (SF Examiner). The saline procedure is induced at the end of the first trimester with a local anesthesia of 200 milligrams of hypertonic saline solution. It is a fairly traumatic birthing process, which includes dilation, contractions and a chemically induced early labor. The video was greeted with much controversy. many women felt I had played into the hands of the Right, appropriating "Back to Life" imagery and humanizing the embryo. I believe the piece stands up on its own as an emblematic statement about an issue that remains central and vital in these dangerous times: a woman's right to choose. I became pregnant with my son two years later.

Not only are the better florists there to get the freshest flowers, but also the latest, freshest, and hottest dish. The scenario of this video is inspired by the central core of the design world: innuendo, rumors and gossip. Hearsay based on the cruising practices of one of New York's top gay floral designers. Desade (1963) 16mm, BW, 10 min

Genre: Experimental

Keywords: art, body, erotic

From the collector of Marquis de Sade in the early 1960s, still a 'dark age ' of erotic picture, even his novels were forbidden to publish in Tokyo, I burrowed the copies of the engraving taken from the 18th century edition of "The story of Juliette" and of "The story of Justine." and rearranged along a story made from of the pictures not from the novels. An exercise out of the curiosity. It was the same year I made Ai(Love) in 1962 which consists of mostly extreme close-ups of love making. I have kept DeSade for many years in my closet without looking at it myself and have forgotten about it. By a chance I re-found the film 50 years later that there is something worth to see.(T.I, 2012)

"Few independents are courageous enough to let their subjects come across in the simple, direct way that was once video's hallmark. That's why it was so refreshing to discover "HELEN WEBSTER: CANCER AND SELF-DISCOVERY"], amid all the "televisionese" evident in this festival. Shot in black-and-white on half-inch portapak, Rosenthal has let a marvelously articulate woman speak to us without embarrassment, with considerable laughter and occasional perplexity, about what it is like to live 15 years with cancer--'half-bald, with one breast, and a bag strapped to one side of my abdomen.' With poems she's written and thoughts organized not to waste the viewer's time, Helen Webster is funny, moving and irresistible as she talks about sex, her fear of death, and thoughts about suicide." --Deirdre Boyle Sightlines. Inversion (2013) 16mm, color_bw, 12 min

Genre: Experimental

Keywords: body, landscape, structural

Inversion is a reflection upon the body without memory and without time. In a unique blending of perspectives in, behind and around the camera, it creates an open space to expand female consciousness, as an embodiment of the film itself. Shot, edited and finished in 16mm, this film showcases the intricacies and beauty of the film medium, in creating a new dialog between filmmaker, camera and subject. There is a yearning to discover a space for the female self, a space where this self can discover her body and break away from the external gazes of both camera and viewer. Through this exploration of (her)self and the space around, the viewer is invited to reflect upon their own bodies and gazes. With visual exchanges between the female performer, the camera and the landscape, Inversion constantly questions the conventions of filmmaking and roles of women within this cinematic space. There is an inherent tension that is present within these interactions, a dialog between pain and pleasure, visible and invisible, self and other that asks the viewer to become a participant within the cinematic experience. It pulls the viewer into the nothingness that lies beyond the boundaries of the camera itself. Inversion exposes this space of uncertainty, trying to control the uncontrollable within.

Mercedes is inspired by De Acosta's own published memoirs, Here Lies the Heart (1960) in which De Acosta obsessively lists her impressive cache of celebrity acquaintances (including Elenora Duse, Isadora Duncan, Alice B. Toklas, Marlene Deitrich, and Greta Garbo, among others). The film borrows De Acosta's hyperbolic stylistics to move through archival footage, narrative fantasy sequences, and dramatic "reenactments" in manic combination of varied genre forms. While highlighting De Acosta's distinctive passions for celebrity and her own sexual, ethnic, and spiritual entanglements, Mercedes poses questions about biographical structure and autobiographical representation, history and fantasy, identity and desire.

"At once an insightful deconstruction of stardom and biography, and a wry camp appreciation of their value, Mercedes, Here Lies the Heart is witty, artful, and original."
--Steven Cohan, author of Masked Men: Masculinity and the Movies in the Fifties (1997)and editor of Hollywood Musicals: The Film Reader (2002).

"Mercedes, Here Lies the Heart is exhaustively researched and combines original as well as archival footage, mixing documentary, fiction and fantasy. Using idioms of fan culture and voyeurism, rendered in a polyvalent form, Friedling contributes to a rich tradition of filmmakers who have experimented with gender and personal narrative. What makes Friedling's work distinctive is her use of a marginal figure such as Mercedes (who nevertheless perceives herself as central to various historical events). The director does not permit us identification with this figure, but allows her to become the point from which to launch a series of mini-essays and vignettes at break-neck speed. Mercedes' story becomes as much about her as it is about the paucity of truth, the fertility of imagination, the charm of media images, the crisis of lesbian desire and a melancholic search for meaning. . . Mercedes lives her life as a tissue of lies which lead her to an equally flawed, highly Orientalizing, moment of truth . . . In subtle ways, the film makes her fabrications a mockery of the worlds inhabited by her glamorous ex-lovers Garbo and Dietrich; a world that remains inaccessible to Mercedes in any real terms. By turning the limitations of her (marginal) protagonists into a meditation on society at large, I would argue that Friedling goes further than a previous generation of feminist filmmakers who explored women's valorization of personal narrative when confronted with the impossibility of female self-expression within patriarchy. Friedling affectionately celebrates narratives of failure and error, which are compelling for their insistent, if doomed, alternative takes on reality."
-Priya Jaikumar, Assistant Professor of Film at the University of Southern California's School of Cinema-Television and author of Cinema at the End of Empire: Britain and India, 1927-1947 (2006).

"It has been widely reported that prisoners confined to dark cells often see brilliant light displays, which is sometimes called the "prisoner's cinema. [...] The brain contains many (perhaps an infinite number) of feedback loops. One of these involves a pathway between a part of the frontal lobe of the brain, which extends through the cingulate gyrus, caudate nucleus and down to the thalamus. This particular pathway is associated with the neurotransmitter serotonin, which is involved in many biological processes, including those of depression and sleep." -Salvatore Cullari.

Irma Vep, The Last NIght (2014) DVD, color, 35 min

Genre: Narrative, Experimental, Installation

Keywords: Arts & Artists, Body, Erotic, Films about Films, Philosophical, Queer/Bi/Trans

"Irma Vep, the last breath" is a multichannel video project based on Musidora, the French silent film actress, and the character she is best known for, Irma Vep from the film Les Vampires (dir. Louis Feuillade 1915). It's a piece about living in the shadows, criminal anxiety and the relationship between the artist and her creation, both fictional and real. Irma Vep and Musidora are played by Zackary Drucker and Mother Flawless Sabrina, two artists who have developed a relationship that transgresses the border of art and life, obliterating social expectations while documenting a cultural evolution of gender. This project mirrors their relationship with that of Musidora and Irma Vep, taking up motifs from the silent movie such as gazes, affected body language and the figure of the masked woman. Shot on a starkly illuminated set that makes space for anxious projections of desire and knowledge on the void that is Irma Vep - a space between the genders, between vamps of the silent era and the contemporary queer - 'Irma Vep, the last breath" smashes the shiny veneer of artifice to reveal dark, subconscious layers of identity

Seeing Through The Body
with Yayoi Kusama, with Mario Montez

Flower
1968-69, 11 min, color, music: Tomomi Adachi (2007)
With: Yayoi Kusama (Body Painting) with the performers Akiko Iimura

While I was staying in New York in the 1960s during the rise of the hippie movement, I filmed performances of body painting artist, Kusama Yayoi, together with the performers. As I wasn't satisfied with merely documenting her performance, made super-impositions of flowers over the performance, more as a film poem than a documentary, since flowers was the symbol of the hippie movement as given the name "flower children." The performance, however, is not always in the foreground, but is woven like fabric among the superimposed flowers. Furthermore another female figure (Akiko Iimura) is inserted with her kimono contrasting to the scenes of Kusama's. The film ends symbolically in long shots a flower patterned dress with no body is suspended over the Empire State Building behind. Nearly 40 years later Tomomi Adachi composed music for the film. (T.I)

Face
1968-69, 19 min, color, music: Mario Montez, Donna Kerness, Linda / Voice Over: Akiko Iimura

In the same year that 'Flowers' was produced I happened to make the acquaintance of Mario Montex, a superstar of Andy Warhol's films whose name was taken after one time Hollywood Star, Mario Montez. I was attracted by his transvestite beauty. In addition to Mario's performance I also shot the performances by Donna Kerness, who had appeared in the black comedy of the Kuchar brothers' underground films, and Linda who was a personal acquaintance. Fiction and reality collide in microscopic montage with the sexual performances limited to only facial expressions in extreme close-up of those three females (including Mario). These close-ups were inherited from my earlier Love (1962), but this time the film was shot in color and focused on individual action. Perhaps the viewer's visual experience will be mixed, blurring the line between fiction and reality. A big, laughing voice throughout the film may sound , yet at the same time the nature of life will fuse (or alienates for some) all. (T.I)

Seeing / Hearing / Speaking (2002) DVD NTSC, , 26 min

Genre: Experimental, Installation

Keywords: body

A multimedia DVD/video with text, video (33 min), graphics and animation, 2002.

A multimedia/interactive DVD: "Seeing/Hearing/Speaking" has two parts, a new video, 2001. The total running time of the video is 33min, which may be seen continuously by clicking "Autoplay" at the menu. (The video version has only first part: "Seeing/Hearing/Speaking", 7min, b/w.)

Based on a sentence taken from the seminal book of Jacques Derrida, French philosopher, "Speech and Phenomena" translated by David B. Allison, I produced first video "Taking to Myself" in 1978 (revised in 2001). The video was highly appreciated as "the strongest, most effective statement one could make from the work of Derrida" by Professor Allison. The sentence I quoted, that Derrida calls "phenomenological essence", is that I hear myself at the same time that I speak.

The new DVD, not just a transfer of video, extends further with text, and graphics, which work interactively. In "Hearing/Speaking", for instance, you can choose among the monitors with the picture of face, head, ear and mouth in the video-installation, and can read/see different programs. So that you can perceive and localize "Hearing/Speaking" with the organs. Together with "Seeing" in this DVD, I could combine the perception of "Seeing" with "Hearing/Speaking". Besides "Talking to Myself", other related videos are "Talking in New York" (1981, revised in 2001) and "Talking to Myself at PS1" (1985).

Throughout these videos I have examined the validity of an identity in video, which is different from the actual voice, between "the I who hear" and "the I who speak." It extends also to "the I who see" and "the I who is seen". The text includes "A letter to Takahiko Iimura" by David B. Allison, and "On Talking to Myself" by Takahiko Iimura. (T.I)

The I Ching AKA, the Chinese BOOK OF CHANGES, is a "reflection of the universe in miniature." It allows one to connect with such energy thru philosophy and inquiry. Its 64 hexagrams describe typical but different states of energy found in life. It uses elements of Nature to describe different types of forces, each with their own qualities (example: wind is "penetrating" yet "gentle"). My practice is intuitive action, taken after researching the I CHING hexagram. I use color to stand for the elements of thunder (for the top trigram - red shirt) which occurs over lightning/fire (for bottom trigram - white pants). #55 means CITADEL, or CANOPY (under heaven), also ABUNDANCE and (reaching) the ZENITH, which cannot be maintained. As no ZENITH can ever last, at the peak the movement we tip over into the next hexagram, in THE HOUSE OF WATER/ HOUSE of the ABYSSMAL: #36 DARKNESS. #55 is about expanded intelligence, portraying an energetic movement. In #55, an offering of rice grain supports the crossing over into victory."Crossing the bridge" is engaging the enemy. This hexagram was pulled by King Wu, who avenged his father King Wen. King Wen is said to have written the philosophy of the I CHING after being imprisoned by the Shang Dynasty leaders. He died in their prison. King Wu inquired of the I CHING what action he should take while entering the mourning period for his father. It advised against staying still. At the time of King Wu's inquiry, there was an eclipse and the pole stars were seen at noon. He entered the battlefield of war with his father's coffin accompanying him and his troops. They defeated the SHANG.

Performative Super 8 manipulation to Digital Projection. Saudade is a word in Portuguese and Galician that claims no direct translation in English. It describes a deep emotional state of nostalgic or profound melancholic longing for an absent something or someone. It often carries a repressed knowledge that the object of longing might never return. Its the recollection of feelings, experiences, places or events that once brought excitement, pleasure, well-being, which now triggers the senses and makes one live again. It can be described as an emptiness, like someone or something that should be there in a particular moment is missing, and the individual feels this absence. It brings sad and happy feelings all together, sadness for missing and happiness for having experienced the feeling. Through each showing, the film is manipulated live through a series of analog to digital processes. Originally a performance ritual act where the artist tries to control their body through a single repetitive motion and documented in Super 8mm. Inspired by the process of film, Saudade becomes a hypnotic trance of the moving body as an internal dialog of intentions, desires and experiences are exposed. Each film screening is unique and highlights different aspects of the film. PHOTOSENSITIVITY WARNING. Camera: Nung-Hsin Hu

HEMA (2015) 16mm, DVD NTSC, Color, 5:12 min

Hema is an intimate exploration of the female body's special connection with the ebb and flow of the universe, and it's crucial involvement in the direct replenishment, nourishment and care for natural rebirth and growth. The title of this work is a play on 'hemoglobin', the red protein responsible for moving oxygen through the blood of vertebrates. Much like hemoglobin directly influences the successful function of our lifeblood, it is my view that women are direct influencers on the successful function of reproducing in both the maternal-spiritual sense as well as the physical act. Our bodies are powerful vessels and this work intends to highlight the magical elements within the female body through the eyes of a queer woman who lives in a physical-spiritual place of empowerment, confidence and pride in mind and body. By focusing on this character's fetishization of the menstruation process, Hema seeks to empower women to be universally proud of the miracle nature provides the female form as it cycles through existence, and to share this recognition of power with other women in their lives as they see fit.

The ticking of the clock on the bathroom wall carries the heroine, on her 64th birthday, to a wider shore, where time rolls as a mighty river, singing of life and freedom -- her epiphany. "I sensed that it had a personal message for me about aging... it parallels my own path to confronting the shortness of time remaining: as Buddhism teaches, clinging to the expectation that nothing will change leads to suffering. Freedom comes with submerging into the big picture of life from the dolphins to the stars. We can't stay with that perspective constantly, but if we keep open to it, the trap of time loses its grip. I wonder if the final scene is meant to suggest the process of bringing the epiphany into daily life." "I will be turning 60 in a couple of months. For me, I felt the fear of time running out, what had I accomplished, what could I have accomplished or been, and that I could stay shackled by those fears or jump into the river and enjoy the time. Thank you so much for sharing this with me. May I share it with others?"

Three non-narrative tales, OVID ILLUSTRATED; MILLERS' TALE; SPLIT BOWLES, based on literary classics (by way of 1950's Classic Comics) and Early Onset, a video meditation on how fast, especially in later late, tempus fugit. "The three videos had... both an "old tale" feel to them mixed with uninhibited modern boldness. I enjoyed their mischievous naughty playfulness, and wickedness of no holds barred. The energy from these two chemists in video kinetics is both potent and palpable." - Mike Kuchar.

Breathing Twice (2009) DVD, color, 7 min

Genre: Experimental

Keywords: arts & artists, body, dance, music

Calligraphic images of paint on skin, which the filmmaker traces on her own body, are intercut with details of New York′s Chinatown. Meanwhile, a classic Chinese story, about a clever messenger and a treasured piece of jade, emerges in passing from the ambient sounds heard on Chinatown's streets. BREATHING TWICE is a portrait of a specific place, and also a study of line - line as drawing, painting and writing, and line in relation to language. BREATHING TWICE also looks at less visible lines, especially the elusive, disappearing lines that may, or may not, divide one cultural frame of reference from another. This piece unfolds in two languages, so the experience is different depending on whether the viewer speaks English, Chinese, or both.

By Night - No Stillness (2009) DVD, , 10 min

Genre: Experimental

Keywords: arts & artists, body, dance, music

BY NIGHT - NO STILLNESS is a study in black, where black becomes a radiant space within which one finds inner light. Taking its cues from Rothko's last paintings, BY NIGHT - NO STILLNESS homes in on the luminosity that emerges when you enter a dark place. Dancer Miriam Parker and percussionist Hamid Drake perform within a video projection of a black and yellow painting, on Parker's body, by the painter/filmmaker, Katy Martin. The piece explores movement in relation to the painted gesture and fragmented, dreamlike sculptural space.

Skinside Out / Swan's Island / Guilin Road (2002-2005) DVD, color, 30 min

Genre: Experimental

Keywords: arts & artists, body, films about film, personal/diary/journal

SKINSIDE OUT by Katy Martin and Bill Brand 2002, 16mm film, 11 minutes. A private, interior world takes shape within the coded context of shared urban space, as images from the studio are juxtaposed with footage of a construction barge along the Hudson River. By examining both in relation to surface, the work paradoxically looks for what lies within. GUILIN ROAD by Katy Martin 2005, 16mm film SWAN'S ISLAND by Bill Brand and Katy Martin 2005, 16mm film, 5 minutes SWAN'S ISLAND focuses on gesture in painting, and how that relates to the hand-held camera. The emphasis is on the physicality of painting, and its visceral connection to memory and imagination. Here, the movement of the artist's hand is expanded to include the entire body. The film is about gesture as a kind of performance. Katy paints directly on her skin, and as she moves, leaves marks on the floor. Bill films the body and its trace, linking his own movement with cinematic space. SWAN'S ISLAND explores the act of seeing as inextricable with that of being seen.
