Sluts and Goddesses Video Workshop or How to be a Goddess in 101 Easy Steps, The (1992) VHS NTSC, color, 52.00 min

Genre: Documentary, Experimental

Keywords: Body, Erotic

It is said if you follow the video carefully you will "be happier and healthier, improve your sex life, and even create miracles..." THE SLUTS AND GODDESSES VIDEO WORKSHOP OR HOW TO BE A SEX GODDESS IN 101 EASY STEPS is a humorous, absurd, heartfelt and worshipful look at SEX. This tape, featuring an all woman cast, is made especially for women to inspire more sensual and sexual pleasure in their lives. THE SLUTS AND GODDESSES VIDEO WORKSHOP OR HOW TO BE A SEX GODDESS IN 101 EASY STEPS utilizes the forbidden and ancient roles of women to achieve personal transformation. Guided through this adventure by eroticist Annie Sprinkle and her team of "Transformation Facilitators" one encounters the more exotic ways to stimulate pleasure such as: flagellation by oak leaves, gender bending, body shaving, sword dancing, ritual body painting, contortions, menstrual blood, female ejaculation, rhythmic deep breathing, primal screaming, group masturbation, passionate safe sex and more in this guided adventure. This dazzling video challenges the boundaries of "femininity," of the "good girl/bad girl" myths and the definitions of sexual "norms." It is meant to unleash women's sexual powers and remind them that sex is sacred. It is blatant and undyingly explicit, an "eye fuck." Annie Sprinkle and Maria Beatty are daring and bold in their approach to a new (or perhaps ancient) freedom of the body.

Blicklust (1992) 16mm, color, 18 min

Genre: Experimental

Keywords: Body, Erotic

Sometimes I ask myself what KIND of films I make + I think they are horror films. Do I make horror films? In 1991 I received a non-identifiable and worn out super-8 S/M Porno film, which shows a woman tied up in various manners + I couldn't resist. I knew that I had film material of surgery + I mixed the tied-up woman with the surgery material confrontationally + still a few more + and to 2/3 of a drawer of found footage until Blicklust-end. The "Pumping-screen" films THE MURDER MYSTERY + BLICKLUST are the first two of a planned six-part series which reflects on sexuality + violence. Basically, I show what I always see on TV, my favorite source. I like to watch TV without sound + with other manipulations. I watch restlessly the real + fake dead bodies. They are always there + I have simply gotten used to the fact that TV is a pump of corpses. In fact, I like better the filtered reality than the actual one. I prefer distance rather than closeness.

Doris Chase: Artist in Motion (1992) VHS NTSC, color, 30 min

Genre: Experimental

Keywords: Art & Artists, Biography & Autobiography

The video tape, written by Doris Chase and art historian Patricia Failing, illustrates work discussed in the Failing 's book, DORIS CHASE, ARTIST IN MOTION: FROM PAINTING AND SCULPTURE TO VIDEO ART. They are a celebration of the distinguished artist and a historical summary of the development of video as an art form. Highlighting the accomplishments of Doris Chase in the field of video art, this video gallery tour, narrated by the artist, starts in Seattle, Washington, where she began her career in the visual arts as a painter in the 1950s. In the 1960s, Chase began to work in sculpture, creating small modular kinetic compositions that could be rearranged by the viewer. In the late 1960s, she collaborated with other artists to create elaborate multimedia spectacles involving dance and sculpture. Chase began working with the medium of film to capture the transitory images presented in the performances. Moving to New York City in 1972, she expanded her work with filmdance through the medium of video, exploring the limits of studio technology as well as new equipment such as video synthesizers to create hybrids of dance and painting that constitute a unique contribution to the history of video art. In the 1980s, Chase drew upon her skill with video effects to add new dimensions of meaning to spoken texts. In her most recent work, she explores the experiences and perspectives of older women with nuanced performances by celebrated actresses such as Geraldine Page, Ann Jackson, Luise Rainer, and Joan Plowright. "Doris Chase practically invented what many people today are calling 'video dance.' ... To describe her as a pioneer, however, misrepresents the finesse of her handling of the video medium and the polished beauty of her tapes." -- Dance Scope

Babel Town (1992) 16mm, color, 8 min

Genre: Animation, Experimental

"In BABEL TOWN Janie Geiser extends her puppet performances to film, creating neither a filmed record of a puppet show, nor an exercise in puppet animation. Instead Geiser uses film and puppets to create a fable that glides between the animate and the inanimate, the miniature and the monumental. Through a window, a Girl escapes from a house where parental conflicts seem to hammer down the roof. Gliding through a dream-like environment, in her newfound freedom she encounters dangerous hurdles: rhythmically slicing scissors and the construction of a massive Tower of Babel, all accompanied by a percussive soundtrack of clicks, clangs, snips, sudden tocsins and tapped-out messages. Returning home, she discovers she has undergone an Alice in Wonderland-like change in scale and no longer fits in the confined boxes of family security. Her parents watch their now giant daughter through the window. "Geiser constructs a truly dream-like nighttime odyssey in which liberation is closely followed by threats, and escape from immediate family conflicts seems only a prologue to an encounter with demonic tools, hammers and scissors, which construct a larger (but still controlling) reality around the wandering Girl. In the Book of Genesis, the Tower of Babel led to the creation of multiple languages, and here the titanic heads that appear behind the tower linked by ribbons inscribed with hieroglyphics evoke an encounter with the power of language which can either further constrict the Girl or truly liberate her. Although she remains outside the house of her original confinement, there seems to be some regret as she explores the now diminutive houses with one hand, like a dollhouse of forgotten games, only to slink away like a surprised burglar as a flashlight beam illuminates her. The space she disappears into is ambiguous, like the freedom and threat she has found on her nocturnal journey. Was it all a dream? The hammering down of reality continues." -- Tom Gunning

Black Sun (1992) 16mm, black and white, 26 min

Genre: Experimental

BLACK SUN, based on a short novel by American authot Samuel R. Delany, tells of the meeting between a "spacer" and a "frelk". A "spacer" is an androgyne being, determined to execute technical work on the nearby planets, able to adapt to any kind of gravitation, they become for the "frelks" - who depend on the gravitation of the earth - buyable objects of desire. BLACK SUN starts with the landing of a "spacer" on earth and his meeting with a "frelk woman" who expects a sexual affair with the "floating meat". The impossible love affair (the "spacer" lost its sexual identity due to metamorphosis) takes place in a future world where bodies radiate, where shadows transform into mirrors and where darkness illuminates space. The human being is an insect under the dark light of the sun, in a time far away which is sometimes erroneously called childhood.

Bali Mecanique (1992) 16mm, color, 17 min

Genre: Documentary, Experimental

Keywords: Dance

Starring the dancers from the Tirta Sari, Gunung Sari and Samara Jati gamelan orchestras of Peliatan. BALI MECANIQUE is a two-part, self-reflective study of the dance and rhythms of life in Bali, combining experimental film techniques with documentary-style footage. The first section presents a complete Legong dance intercut with footage of Odalans (temple celebrations) and sacred architecture, building into an increasingly frenetic collage as the dance reaches its crescendo. In contrast, the second section weaves together footage of lush rice terraces and the "erotic bumblebee" of the Oleg Tambulilingan dance to give a humorous literalization of the "other" vision of Bali; the Westerners' paradise on Earth, set to the original record of "Bali Hai" from South Pacific, which the filmmaker grew up on and recently found in a stack of discs on the floor of a closet in his parents' house. The film ends with the famous Kris dance of Batubulan as it is performed today.

An unlikely pair, a partnership in which needs the other to save him or herself. While Fortelka, the former hobo and 'born comedian who was thrust into destiny' carefully orchestrates the details and recollections of his life, we also get the childlike remembrances of Kathi. Kathi, who never grew up, tells us of the daily and ordinary nightmares of life: her mother who sent her of to 'the crazy house', the step father, the brutal lover who beat her unconscious and then tattooed his name on her arm. The transgression and confrontation is re-enacted in this brilliant fugue-like film by Dana Plays constructed of found footage, and concerning both American involvement in oversees conflict and the resultant unseen plight of the child refugee. Subverting state-sponsored informational films on such issues as war bonds and highway safety, Plays transforms these agit-prop rhetorics into a celluloid mirror of transgression as a larger cultural pathology. In Zero Hour, the results - the products of war return to the initial cite of production: an assumed audience of Americans, middle-class citizens of an ideal suburban dream who have somehow foregone the immediate experiences and repercussion of mass destruction and displacement. The gaze rests on us. We are the sugar-stated, hyper and unaware violator, an audience whose relationship to world events is nowhere more homogeneous than in or communal incubation and guilt.

PARALLEL SPACE: INTER-VIEW was made using a still camera. The photograph produced by a 35mm camera corresponds exactly to the size of two film frames. If the negative of a photograph is projected sideways, two film frames are seen: first the upper and then the lower half of the original photographic image is projected. Its temporal and spatial unity disintegrates into pieces which then start corresponding with each other. "Photographic processes - the material transformations involved in recording, developing, printing, and in the case of film, projecting function as metaphors for psychological processes. What Tscherkassky does is to take various tropes of '60s structural filmmaking (derived from Landow, Kubelka, Frampton, Gehr and Sharits) and run them through a Lacanian psychoanalytic sieve. In both form and psychological content, PARALLEL SPACE is deeply reflexive." - Amy Taubin, "Flash Floods: PARALLEL-SPACE: INTER-VIEW"

Doctor Clown (1992) VHS_NTSC, color, 30 min

Genre: Documentary

Keywords: body, childrean & youth, personal diary & journal, science & medicine

The movie Patch Adams starring Robin Williams made the physician-social-crusader-clown world famous. This documentary offers a revealing encounter with the real Patch Adams. Here we see exclusive sequences of his "Between-the-Sheets Therapy" with a disturbed, suicidal patient named Dave, which show how far the doctor is willing to go to find a way to relieve a person's suffering. No one in the world has ever used this as a therapeutic tool. There are other touching examples of Dr. Adams' inimitable, creative approach to caring for patients in different parts of the world. And for the first time ever we are allowed to see his unique "Joy Workshop."

Roots, Thorns (1992) 16mm, color, 23 min

Genre: Documentary, Experimental

Keywords: environment_nature, ethnic_multicultural

Filmed on a return visit with the Ashaninka in the tropical forest of eastern Peru. Moving in close with the camera to people who still live with the land, cook over fires and raise their children in the forest. Earth, river, animals, weather. Forces of turmoil and of nature. Forces that surround the senses at all times. "The Peru films do not just give us the familiar thrill of a look at a (strange) way of life; rather...something quite amazing takes place: a kind of re-scaling of perception, so that the other space of the Ashaninka, while retaining its everydayness and relative indiscernibility, can for a moment be experienced on its own terms." --Ackbar Abbas, UC-Irvine "Mysterious, allusive, and yet also concrete, this is a work of poetry as much as of fact, opening up a new terrain for the documentary, a space of complex reflection where myth and current events flow into one another." --Dick Blau, Univ. of Wisconsin-Milwaukee

Amy Halpern

Falling Lessons (1992) color, 64 min

Genre: Experimental

"Amy Halpern's 64 minute Falling Lessons is a stunningly sensual, life-affirming experience from a major experimental film artist that is open to myriad meanings. The film is a rhythmic montage of almost 200 faces, human and animals, that Halpern pans vertically, creating a cascade of visages suggesting that while individuals express a range of emotions they remain ultimately enigmas. The glimpses of life going on around all these faces have an unsettling, even apocalyptic quality, and the film forces you to consider living beings and their value collectively rather than selectively. Halpern's rich, inspired mix of sounds, words and music complements her images perfectly." -Kevin Thomas, Los Angeles Times
