A Landscape Drawing (2012) DVD Blu-Ray, Color, 20 min

Genre: Experimental

This film is an experiment in storytelling. In four Acts, tracking-shots of mountains, basins and plains jump-cut into one another over the cues of classical music. What unfolds is akin to a hero's journey or an adventure - slightly out-of-touch with reality and in-tune with our collective imaginations and dreams.

Toil of Three Cities/Liebesmueh (2012) DVD NTSC, color & b/w, 16 min

Genre: Narrative, Documentary, Experimental

Keywords: personal_diary_journal

Music: Charlie Morrow, DJ Robeat, Matthew Lee Knowles, Virgil Segal, Brandstifter. Language: English with some translated German. Shot in New York, London and Berlin, this experimental documentary performance narrative is a tongue-in-cheek video fable that tells the tale of an artist struck by the extreme, sustained physical exertion of ordinary workmen. She seeks meaning in her own life by searching for the reasons behind their seeming enjoyment of "backbreaking work for the pleasure of others." She decides to practice yoga to strengthen her own body and open her heart, but feels inadequate to the task, so she sets out on a quest to find a guru-worker to tell her why they work so hard. Feeling guilty that her own heart is not so pure, she tries to avoid detection and arrest, but that inevitably happens. While in prison she meets 12 hard-working prostitutes who do manage to open her heart, then 4 little girls show us what is and is not valued as labor in contemporary society. By the end, the construction worker's words of wisdom provide a surprising insight that can only exist in Rosenthal's absurdist universe, which, of course, tells much about our own. Includes evocative, powerful original jazz and experimental music by Charlie Morrow and four other composers, additional text, video, audio and performance by DJ RoBeat, Super-8 footage by Bill Creston, and images from Rosenthal's extensive library. Premiered at Directors Lounge Internationall Film Festival, Berlin, Feb. 2012. LIMITED EDITION OF 30 SIGNED/NUMBERED

An attempt to provide an introduction to the Germany period of my life, from 1944 to October 1949. Blushes is an exploration of the body. It contrasts gentle imagery of the female form with stark geometrics and powerful rushes of color. Self-depiction and tangible manipulation of the filmstrip establish a new agency for the filmmaker. Through its confrontational nature it subverts the gaze from viewer to subject. Hand-painted.

"It has been widely reported that prisoners confined to dark cells often see brilliant light displays, which is sometimes called the "prisoner's cinema. [...] The brain contains many (perhaps an infinite number) of feedback loops. One of these involves a pathway between a part of the frontal lobe of the brain, which extends through the cingulate gyrus, caudate nucleus and down to the thalamus. This particular pathway is associated with the neurotransmitter serotonin, which is involved in many biological processes, including those of depression and sleep." -Salvatore Cullari.

One day in May is an installation collaboration with composer and violinist Alex Balanescu, highlighting the sculptural and visceral beauty of the mayfly. Her death comes in the form of a spider that descends his web to devour her, leaving only a shell of the carcass to be rocked by the night's breeze, gentle and quiet before a summer storm descends.

Summer *steph chin in the summer (2012) DVD NTSC, b&w, 4.5 min

Genre: Documentary, Experimental

Keywords: ethnic/multicultural, history, personal/diary/journal

Shot in black and white super-8 film, the short loosely follows one Chinese American girl as she finds her way down to Chinatown in New York City. The girl has an obvious relationship with the camerawoman, and both the girl and the camerawoman float in and out of the frame as images of the street life in Chinatown take precedence. There is a sense of adventure but mostly nostalgia. The loose narrative is interrupted by a scene of a mango being sliced open. The music begins again and so do the images of Chinatown. At the end of the film, we see the Chinese American girl again, but this time she is indoors and packing. The music gets heavier and then the film cuts out. -ALK

UNBOUND: Scenes from the Life of Mary Shelley (2012-2013) color, 70 min

Genre: Experimental

Keywords: history

In Rome for a year at the American Academy, Child created imaginary home movies of scenes from the life of Mary and Percy Shelley. She was attracted to those authors - their life of poetry, politics and sexual invention - inspired by previous fictionalizing of home movies in her Convert Action (1984) and The Future is Behind You (2004). She worked with non-actors, the seasons and the extraordinary architecture and landscapes of Italy where the Shelleys were in exile for six of their eight years together. The result is a feature film UNBOUND: gorgeous, emotional, creatively combining new technologies with cinematic language. Digressive, looped, unpredictable, symphonic UNBOUND is a poignant and deep exploration of women and creativity, focused on the teenage author of Frankenstein. The history of the Shellys has drama, degradation, and scandal set within radicalized politics, sexual and class rebellion and the lives of working artists. Child's deconstruction embodies the poetic primacy of memory as well as the wit of techne: layered, diverted, delayed, reframed and remade.

Whitewash (2012) DVD NTSC, color, 6:13 min

Genre: Experimental

Keywords: ethnic & multicultural , history, political & social activism

WHITEWASH is a 6 minute video made by artist, Tania Ferrier as the final piece in a project examining the history of a building on Rottnest Island/ Wadjemup, Western Australia, called The Quod.

Quod means gaol in old English slang, which is what the building functioned as from 1864 to 1903 after which time it was converted to tourist accommodation for ensuing generations of Western Australians.

Its prior history as the notorious Native Prison where over 400 Aboriginal men from died in the cells from inhumane conditions was whitewashed as with the cells which became the bedrooms for tourists. The spelling of Quod was changed to Quad in an attempt to shake off the reference to a gaol. Today it remains accommodation as part of the Rottnest Island Lodge Resort where little information is provided to tourists about the history of the rooms where they sleep.

WHITEWASH is a video that lets us reflect upon the whole of Australian history and how we as a nation have colluded in the collective forgetting of the past and to contemplate what this means to Aboriginal people today.

Aboriginal film maker, Glen Stasiuk and actors, Curtis Taylor and Michael Smith participated in the making of this video along with Antony Webb / DOP, Alan Thompson / additional editing, James Kerr / stills photography and actors Alan Boyd and Monica Maine. Guitar track by Abraham Dunovits, Didj by Steve Richter and additional sound by Alan Thompson. Concept/Direction/Design by Tania Ferrier, C. 2012.

Sweet Violets (2012) DVD, , 4 min

Genre: Documentary

Keywords: environment & nature, history

In the Gilded Age and beyond, high fashion decreed that violets were the flower of choice for Valentine's Day, Easter and a fragrant corsage. At its height, in the years before World War I, Rhinebeck, New York, growers shipped millions of sweet violets (viola odorata) the New York City, Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago and beyond.

Sweet Violets explores the mythology and history surrounding violets through the use of Greek poetry, Native American tales and stories of historical figures like Napoleon and and Frederic Chopin. A clinical herbalist introduces and explains the medicinal and culinary properties of cultivated and wild violets.

Sweet Violets includes vintage photographs and postcards, rare film footage, 19th century music and literature. All these, plus interviews with historians and commercial growers, tell the neglected story of sweet violets and their effort on a small Hudson Valley town.

Pareidolia is an abstract narrative exploring the landscape/architecture of the body as a container of memories. Layers of stories, dreams and memory fragments are interconnected like muscle fibers. The film uses bleached and distressed film stock, cut-paper puppets, stop-motion sets, hand-drawn animation, and various hybrid techniques. Through a re-imagining of family stories and life events, the film attempts to connect my experiences witnessing public cremations in India to my Great Grandmother's miraculous survival of a mass killing by Hungarian Nazis along the banks of the Danube in 1944.

Matters of Bioluminescence is a personal documentation of the bioluminescent phenomena. I am utilizing various conventional and unconventional methods to explore and document these organzisms and provide a unique perspective to the glowing life forms. The film begins with a time-lapse of fireflies and various raw film stocks contained in a glass jar. The second portion of the film is the abstract result the bioluminescent insects create with the light sensitive film. The film then focuses on foxfire, the glowing mushrooms. Mushrooms are filmed in their environment using time-exposure cameras and therefore demonstrates the waxing and waning of the fungi's luminescence. The mushrooms are also placed directly onto various raw film stocks generating an animated illustration of foxfire as it burns its image into the film. I am currently working with dinoflagellates, which will be added to the film.
