Peggy Ahwesh She Puppet
(2001) DVD NTSC, color, Sound, 17 min Genre: Experimental Keywords: Body, Found Footage, Philosophical, Technology An homage to and commentary on the female action adventure game Tomb Raider and its busty virtual superstar Laura Croft. I played the game on the my computer and simultaneously recorded the gameplay onto videotape. Then I treated the material as "found footage" and recut it in order to rethink the game and consider questions about women, virtual bodies, role-playing, identity issues and fandom. Ignoring the original drive of action, I make Lara explore the game environment at the edges of the programming world created for her. The limited inventory of Lara's gestures and the militaristic scenarios of the game are considered from a feminist perspective in analyzing the symbolic feminine and the popular culture that has sprung up around Lara Croft. Quotations are from three authors who philosophize the alien, the clone and the orphan: The Book of Disquiet by Fernando Pessoa, The Female Man by Joanna Russ and the jazz mystic Sun Ra. "Through elegantly overlaid, constructionist windows of geometric form, we see into the turgid furnace of man's multifarious tasks, and, as in a vision, behold the ballet of his tools and accoutrements: steaming tar, turning pulleys, swishing mops, changing lights and sewer-plates, acetyline torches and sandblasting serpents, snorting sting of jackhammers and gleaming jewels amid grime where undinal heat makes the atmosphere buckle.

Dominic Angerame Deconstruction Sight
(1995) 16mm, VHS NTSC, black and white, sound, 13 min Genre: Experimental Keywords: History, Landscape & Architecture, Technology "A somber, gong-like tone opens DECONSTRUCTION SIGHT: the first image is a small light in darkness, a delicate flicker that grows to become a welder's torch. We are led into the film by a suggestive imagistic shorthand: 'the rise of man' is attended by the building of structures, and cities, a montage of the emblems of civilization. The end of the film brings a series of unnerving images - one reminiscent of an eerie jack-o-lantern from childhood memory: a skyscraper looming in the night, a bank of windows lit up like its gaping mouth. As fog and clouds rush in fast frame across the sky for a dizzying, synesthetic effect, Kevin Barnard's soundtrack pounds an urgent wail to the rhythm of climax spending itself in question, in philosophical ambiguity, not release. An almost palpable centrifugal force seems to move the final moments of the film into a spinout. "This is history without narrative, an abstract summation of what happens when human beings move stuff around and make something of it, grow tired of what they've made and demolish it using other things they've made, and then start all over again. Scott Bartlett Metanomen
(1966) 16mm, black and white, sound, 8 min Genre: Experimental Keywords: Technology The films of Scott Barlett use a vocabulary--negative images, polarization, TV techniques, computer- film, electronic patterns-- which is shared with that of the engineer, the mathematician, the computer itself. What he says with this vocabulary, however is quite different. "Aleph is an artist’s meditation on life, death, mysticism, politics, and pop culture. In an eight-minute loop of film, Wallace Berman uses Hebrew letters to frame a hypnotic, rapid-fire montage that captures the go-go energy of the 1960s. Aleph includes stills of collages created using a Verifax machine, Eastman Kodak’s precursor to the photocopier. These collages depict a hand-held radio that seems to broadcast or receive popular and esoteric icons. Signs, symbols, and diverse mass-media images (e.g., Flash Gordon, John F. Kennedy, Mick Jagger) flow like a deck of tarot cards, infinitely shuffled in order that the viewer may construct his or her own set of personal interpretations. The transistor radio, the most ubiquitous portable form of mass communication in the 1960s, exemplifies the democratic potential of electronic culture and serves as a metaphor for Jewish mysticism. Roy Colmer 278
(1976) 16mm, color, sound, 11.25 min Genre: Experimental Keywords: Landscape & Architecture, Technology "Colorized video tape transferred to film, of cars on Route 278 in Brooklyn. The screen an electronic canvas where color is unified with the elegance of speeding machines. 278 transforms into pulsating luminescent imagery, to my mind surreal film paintings. 278 having the pastel shadings and mystery of an Odilon Redon." Roy Colmer Metamorphosis
(1973) 16mm, color, sound, 30 min Genre: Experimental Keywords: Body, Technology The original material for the film was made from black and white video tapes of nude models -- the result of work sessions over a period of three months. The best sequences were taken and fed into a quantizer, which transfer the black and white tapes to color. The quantizer is sophisticated equipment: color complexity and juxtaposition can be altered to a high degree. A 16mm color film was made from the screen of the quantizer. Concentration in the film is of one and sometimes two models continually moving through the frame; as the film progresses, the figures become more and more abstract. The music I programmed and recorded live from ARP synthesizer and it consists of basic rhythms which change slowly as the images in the film evolve. Rental: $40.00 |
