Gordon Ball Clouds of Glory
(1981) 16mm, color, silent, 12.30 min Genre: Experimental Keywords: Children & Youth, Family, Personal / Diary / Journal Last three months of Kathleen's pregnancy; first week of Daisy's life.
'the soul that rises with us, our life's star/ hath had elsewhere its setting/ and cometh from afar/ not in entire forgetfulness/ and not in utter nakedness/ but trailing clouds of glory do we come/ from God who is our home.' Wordsworth, Ode: Imitations of Immortality from 'recollections of early childhood' Viewers of some of my last four films have offered suggestions for programming-projecting FATHER MOVIE and ENTHUSIASM as companion films, for instance. Lately, I've been seeing the most recent three as a trilogy offering metaphor of existence -- CLOUDS OF GLORY (birth), MEXICAN JAIL FOOTAGE (prison life-bodily existence), and ENTHUSIASM (death). And, as it happens, current work in progress (Oct. '82) TH'FIRMAMENT, is set in the heavens-not in celebration of wished-for afterlife but of divine emptiness. Rental: $20.00 |
Scott Bartlett Making Offon
(1981) 16mm, color, sound, 10 min Genre: Documentary Keywords: Art & Artists In the summer of 1967, Mike MacNamee, Glen Mckay and Scott Barlett met for America's first electrovideographic jam. Barlett's film loop and Mackay's light show liquids were mixed through a video effects bank and the results were filmed by MacNamee directly off the studio monitor with a rented kinescope camera. Barlett edited a portion of this material and then built a sound track with the help of Tom DeWitt, who had also supplied many of the original film loops, and Manny Meyer, electronic sound composer. The finished film was called OFFON. in 1980, Bartlett recreated the event in a video production class at UCLA. With his student' help, he composed a video primer: MAKING OFFON. Wipes, keying, feedback -- all the standard functions of a studio switcher -- are first illustrated and named, then woven into a sound and picture puzzle of the 60's. A MUST for all video students, especially when shown along with the original OFFON. --S.B. Rental: $25.00 |
