THE SAVAGES is a documentary in the words of black people themselves, unblemished by the customary interpretitive wall of white opinion. The story of black American workingman's childhood and youth on a Texas farm illuminates the reasons for the far different and more violent reaction of contemporary black youth to urban poverty and to confinement in their ghetto jungles. Their reactions are shown, not merely talked about, and the spiritual paralysis their lives exhibit proves the city can twist men's minds and their efforts to do any more than barely survive.–A. G.
