Biography

David Baker is a reclusive painter, poet and filmmaker. Self-taught, he has spent time studying American Indian Rock Art in remote canyons of the Southwest, the architecture of Andrea Palladio in the Veneto of Italy, and the art of the insane in Lausanne, Switzerland. Carl Schuster’s “patterns that connect” are an abiding touchstone in Baker’s oeuvre. Syncretism, puzzle play, and seriality underlie most
of what he makes.

He has exhibited paintings at the Tony Shafrazi, Annina Nosei, Tibor de Nagy, John Good, and Postmasters Galleries in NYC as well as at the S. L. Simpson Gallery in Toronto. The University of South Florida Tampa has published a catalog of his work entitled AVATARS OF THE TORTOISE.

His films have screened at Migrating Forms, The Maysles Cinema, Millennium Film Workshop, Anthology Film Archives, Union Docs, Microscope Gallery, Museum Kurhaus Kleve, Germany, The 49th New York Film Festival – Views From The Avant-Garde, and the Loop Festival, Barcelona.
