Jennifer, Where are You? (1981) 16mm, color, 10 min

Genre: Experimental

Shows a child age ten years in one shot, a sort of sound version of the Kuleshov experiment. -- L.T. "The film is a questioning of authority and authorship, of the power implicit in authority, of the balance between her fear and her will to disrupt, of the balance between her fear and his inability to understand her (lack of an) answer ..." -- Su Friedrich, Downtown Review, 1981.

Adynata (1983) 16mm, color, 13.5 min

Genre: Experimental

Keywords: Ethnic / Multicultural

ADYNATA offers a vulgar tour of the Other, in this case Imperial China?; Woman?; Madness?; Japan?; Murder?; Eroticism? -- L.T. "The colors are extremely vivid and work to amplify what at first glance appears to be an unruly fetishism of the exotic object. There is too much for the eye - the film seemingly capitulates to the seductive force of visual pleasure. But this richness of the image is somewhat deceptive. It is itself a second-order signifier of an exoticism associated with the discourse of Orientalism which is both quoted and criticized by the film. And, for Thornton, the discourse of Orientalism is precisely a discourse of excess, of hyperbole, of the absurd. In ADYNATA she investigates the mise-en-scene of Orientalism - the conglomeration of sounds and images which connote the Orient for a Western viewer/auditor." -- Mary Ann Doane, Millenium Film Journal, 1987.

Peggy And Fred In Hell (Prologue) (1988) 16mm, black and white, 19 min

Genre: Experimental

PEGGY AND FRED IN HELL (PROLOGUE) is part of an on-going series of films about two small children making their way through a post-apocalyptic landscape. In the prologue, Peggy explores her own voice while Fred decorates the house. They find a flock of dead ducks and decide to move on. PEGGY AND FRED IN HELL will go as far as it can into unfurling the familiar. It is an arbitraty world they live in, not a sensible world, a horrible world, limiting, blind, stupid, arrogant, like any culture. -- L.T. "Fred's performance is a partially intelligible song in which limericks, folksongs, and the Old Testament merge in a final deathblow to culture ... Peggy sings a Michael Jackson song, but rather than performing it she seems to inhabit its legend in a vacant, removed awareness ... The epic ... as a bottomless pit ..." -- Linda Peckham, Unsound, vol. 2, #1.

Let Me Count The Ways - Minus 10, 9, 8, 7 (2004) VHS NTSC, color, 20 min

Genre: Experimental

Keywords: Biography & Autobiography, Films about Film, Media

Tape also includes END IN NEW WORLD (2004) 2 min. LET ME COUNT THE WAYS ... inaugurates a new serial work by Leslie Thornton. As in her recently completed Peggy and Fred series, Thornton explores the social effects of new technologies and media, but here she pushes even further into autobiographical territory to suggest the ways in which we are all implicated in these changes. Juxtaposing aerial military footage; scientific data on genetic mutation; audio testimony about the bombing of Hiroshima, and a home movie of her father, a World War II Air Force pilot, as he is dispatched to that city, Thornton creates a dense and compelling meditation on violence.
