Please Tell Me Why / Seersucker (2007) DVD NTSC, color, 5 min

Genre: Experimental

Keywords: dance, music

Two pieces from 2007, inspired by early soul television performances by Otis Redding and Jackie Wilson, demonstrate my conflicted desires as an artist. Please Tell Me Why's character is at once crucified to his context and camouflaged inside of it. Immobile, digitized, and pre-recorded a singer is sheathed in an increasingly static abstraction. He is eventually lost by the camera scaling outward, but still heard. He asks why we have left him there. Seersucker moves from back-lit to front-lit, and in clashing clean verticality with messy horizontality, a hero entertainer is defeated painter. A racially ambiguous character is caught between two versions of the same song. In an attempt to stand erect, the performer achieves un-making a mark in rewind.
