In this documentary portrait, a charismatic, older, gay, Jewish man undergoes an evolution of awareness and offers viewers an opportunity for reflection about the complexity of human identity. Not a Still Life is a portrait of Steve Stone who shares the ups and downs of his unconventional life. With both humor and raw honesty, Steve tells of childhood ridicule in the 60’s, coming out in the early 60’s (long before the Stonewall Rebellion) and living openly gay for fifty years. He lives a wildlife, fids true love, deals with tragedy and loss, loneliness and the realization of aging. His gradual evolution includes connecting with a long lost relative, finding meaning in his Judaism and discovering his spirituality – only to find that he is in danger of losing his home and his business. Not a Still Life is about a man in search of his identity and a sense of belonging. This one man’s story taps into themes that encompass all our lives. His unique reflections stimulate argument and provide a most unique understanding of ourselves.
