There is no barrier to submission to distribute your work through the Film-Makers’ Cooperative.
We firmly believe that it is up to the maker to decide what sort of film or video they should make. The Coop was founded partly as a protest against mainstream film distribution systems wherein curators, distributors, and exhibitors would exclude certain innovative work, with little regard for the originality of these films. Many of these films — such as Kenneth Anger’s Scorpio Rising (1963), Andy Warhol’s Sleep (1964), Storm de Hirsch's Peyote Queen (1965), and John Waters’ Mondo Trasho (1969) — are now classics of avant-garde cinema, and yet it took the Coop to first accept them.
When you deposit your work with the Film-Makers’ Cooperative, you will make it available to our vast international distribution network.
Our distribution network consists of thousands of museums, galleries, festivals, colleges, universities, cinematheques, and artist collectives. You set the rental price(s) for your work, and when your work rents, you receive 50%, while the Coop retains 50% for overhead. Currently, filmmaker-member royalties are paid on request. Please call the Coop to have your royalty statement sent to you.
Coop filmmaker-members retain all rights to their work.
Since the Coop is non-exclusive, your work can be distributed elsewhere, as long as your other distributors don’t mind that your work is also distributed by the Coop. At any time, you may withdraw your work from the Coop's collection.
We currently accept work on 8mm, Super 8mm, 16mm, Super 16mm, 35mm, video, and digital formats.
When you deposit your work in the Coop, it will be listed in our catalogue alongside avant-garde legends who got their start the very same way, and will become part of an artistic and cultural legacy spanning over half a century.
Membership dues for the Film-Makers' Cooperative are only $40/year!
Since the Coop is an artist-run, non-profit organization, we rely on the support of our members to keep us going. As we invite you to contribute your annual membership fee, we also invite you to contribute to the Coop’s endeavors and to share your vision of the organization with us.
What would you like to see reflected in our public programming and filmmaking workshops? What organizations would you like us to collaborate with? How would you like us to promote and champion your and others' work? We hope to continue these exciting conversations with you.
We want your work to get as many eyes on it as possible.
Do you want to be featured in the new “Member Spotlight” section of our weekly newsletter and social media announcements? Would you like us to feature your films on our Vimeo video-on-demand streaming service? Are you interested in having the Coop host a screening of your films, and/or would you like to curate a program of your and others’ works from the Coop’s collection? Let us know!
Our priority, first and foremost, is to support and disseminate the work of the artists that make up our rich and vibrant filmmaking community.
