Biography

Karen Cunningham is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice is primarily engaged with film and moving image.

Focusing on marginalized or liminal places and events her works employ conceptual and physical processes of ‘undoing’ to engage with overlooked and under-theorized sites, events, images, and individuals. Her films include 'Apparent Time' (2024) 'Mean Time' (2020) and 'Movable Type: Under Erasure' (2016) made in collaboration with the theorist Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak.

Karen gained a First Class degree in Photography from Edinburgh College of Art including student exchange study at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, USA, and an MFA from Glasgow School of Art. In 2022 she completed her practice-based PhD 'World-making and Un-doing: Looking at minor cultural forms through moving image practice' at Edinburgh College of Art.

Karen's films and artworks are shown nationally and internationally and include work commissioned by LUX Moving Image, Collective Gallery Edinburgh, and The Centre for Research Collections at Edinburgh University.

She is based in Glasgow, UK.
