Biography

Walter Ungerer was born in New York City in 1935 and became an early figure in the movement of experimental and avant-garde film.

He graduated from the Pratt Institute and later from Columbia University, where he began making his own films while also teaching film studies. Over the years, he created an extensive body of work. After relocating to Vermont in the 1960s, he continued to teach at various institutions while making a number of feature length narrative films. By the 1980s, he embraced new technologies—first working with computers, then digital cameras—to expand his artistic expression.

In 2003, Ungerer moved to Maine, where he continued to create film as art. After more than fifty years of dedicated filmmaking, he passed away in 2024, leaving behind a rich and influential legacy.
