Barbara Rubin and the Exploding NY Underground

Mana Contemporary, 888 Newark Ave, Jersey City, NJ 07306

Documentary on the Life of Barbara Rubin

Sebastian Mekas and Chuck Smith join Mana Contemporary to present a screening of "Barbara Rubin and the Exploding NY Underground," prior to the film’s public release online. Mekas introduces the film with an opening screening of "Keep Singing: A Tribute to Jonas Mekas," and Smith will stay for a question and answer session following the screening.

Barbara Rubin pushed boundaries by expressing her freedom to make explicit films, at a time when the scene was heavily influenced by male icons. She introduced Andy Warhol to the Velvet Underground and Bob Dylan to the Kabbalah. After Rubin left New York for an unexpected religious pursuit, Jonas Mekas dedicated himself to cementing her personal and professional legacy. Working with Mekas’s footage and rare clips from the Andy Warhol archives, "Barbara Rubin and the Exploding NY Underground" delves into the world and mind of a woman who truly believed that film could change the world.

Presented in partnership with Film-Makers' Coop.
