About
So, tell me about your garden. is a film that I began during a residency in London. My observations as a foreigner of people’s relationships to their gardens somehow being intrinsically part of their Englishness — or not — attracted me to speak to people of different classes about their relationships to these places. With private gardens such as those created by Vita Sackville-West as an ideal, people nurtured their sometimes tiny plots to become places of self realisation separate from their other worldly cares. I also spoke to David Matless, cultural geographer and Professor at Nottingham University, gleaning insights on questions I had about controlling nature while having it look uncontrolled as well as Britain’s colonial past being reflected in exotic plants flourishing on English soil.
