Biography
Janis Crystal Lipzin is a media artist based in Sonoma County, California. Her work combines rich personal expression with themes that include many pressing issues in our society. Her art embodies two central areas of concern. First is a sensual tactile engagement with the materials of films, videos, installations, books and still photography. She uses light to create joyful visual plays of plasticity that reveal hidden meanings. Secondly, her art critiques and investigates themes that are central to all living beings: mortality, ephemerality, aloneness, memory, dailiness and the experiences of joy and loss. Her work has been recognized with exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum, Venice Biennale, Beaubourg Museum, and many others. She taught at the San Francisco Art Institute for 3 decades and has been active in writing and curatorial actions throughout her career.
