An experimental short comprised of Super 8mm footage of my dear friend "Belle Jolie" making her debut burlesque performance at the Providence LGBTQIA+ bar The Dark Lady in February 2024. Glimpses at a Valentine's Day party earlier that evening, hosted and decorated by friend and artist/performer Willow Giannotti-Garlinghouse, are intermingled with the burlesque footage.
Introducing Belle Jolie! is a love letter to all things red, pink, decadent, and divinely feminine, inspired by filmmakers like Doris Wishman and Kenneth Anger (as well as the flicker films of Paul Sharits), and '60s burlesque films like The Hard Swing and Mondo Hollywood. The visuals are soundtracked by the 1967 rarity "Suey," sung by Jayne Mansfield and featuring a pre-fame Jimi Hendrix on guitar.
